ok just thought I'd throw this out there, for anyone who has played in the pit for musical productions, which musical is your favourite musical. I'd just like to hear of some other experiences w/ musicals.
My school drama club recently became state AAAA champions, that is to say my school has a really stealer drama department. I played in their poduction of "Oklahoma" and had a great time, the music was literally unforgettable, of course it is Rogers and Hammerstein after all. I will hopefully play in their musical this year, but i will probably play bass guitar in stead of clarinet since this year's musical has an Elvis theme.

Fiddler on the Roof, of course! In the bottle-dance scene, the 1st clarinet gets to play a great Klezmer-style solo. I played this in high school.
In fact, after getting to play in the pit in that show, I seriously questioned why I had even bothered auditioning for a stage role first.

While in college I was fortunate enough to be able to play "Music Man" and "My Fair Lady." It's a toss-up as to which is my favorite.

So far Candide has been the best show I have ever played. The music is just written so well, it feels like the vocals and the orchestra marry in a way that I haven't experienced in the other shows I have played.

I haven't done all that many, but Franz Lehar's 'The Merry Widow' was a cracker, fantastic fun to play. Complete fluff plot-wise, but great music.

As far as liking the music, Anything Goes has been my favorite. Great tunes and a fun show.
Chicago was very tough because on Reed III, I played bari, BC, tenor, clarinet, and sop sax. The changes were tough and quick.
I've done Fiddler and love to hear the music but playing was not that great; I guess I did not feel the love while in the pit.
Gypsy has one of the best books; we had a really great pit for that one. Story is pretty limp in places (a very weak finish).
There have been several less-memorable gigs.
