 Play it again, differently
Author: huff n' puff

Hi, all............ another suggestion into the melting pot............
have you wanted to play the Mozart Kegelstatt trio ( Eb for clar. viola, pno)
only to find that there isn't a viola player within 50 miles of where you live?
Possibly you can locate a fey violinists and keyboard players...... what to do?
My own solution to this is to play the viola part on clarinet- it fits beatifully with a lot of it in the chalumeau reg, and have the alternative violin playing the lead........... now that I think about it, maybe two clarinets would work. May try that sometime.
Transposing the viola part would keep you off the streets for a few hours.
Maybe someone has done this already?? Glad to hear any views... H&P.

KV498 is available in the Mutopia project. Sources in Lilypond should make transposing reasonably simple.

All you need to do is read the viola part as if it were in bass clef one octave higher and the transposition is taken care of!

I read from viola parts all the time...

I have played the viola part on the basset-horn. This works very well and sounds great.

OK, the saw-saw-saw viola part in the Kegelstadt could be placed almost anywhere, but lets keep the (Bb) Clarinet part where Mozart put it.

And, I'll shoot the next person I find playing a Brahms Clarinet Sonata on French Horn!

Hi, Bob......... I think you are outnumbered on this one- ........ that does not mean that you are wrong........ but.......... I feel that Mozart would give it the thumbs-up......... and then kick himself for not thinking of it first.
Whatever happened to the message from Geirskogul? or is the full stop the comment? .............. H&P.
Katrina........ Hi,..... good on you. I would love to do the double violin concerto by- you know who- but it goes up into the squeeky range a bit ........ It can be done quite successfuly with a bit of octave swapping.
I am still working on the double stopping bit......... any hints? like "forget it"?

Yep......................definitely.

And sometimes,
a line break
would be welcome, too.

I feel compelled to point out, for the benefit of our overseas readers, that Ben's comment:

is an example of a Roesti, a sort of Swiss counterpart to the haiku........I thought y'all.............would appreciate knowing that..................

I take your point, Ed and Tictactux- dot dot dot dot;- this is a habit that I have got into, and perhaps I feel that I am painting a picture of a confab.
New paragraph.
In the second line, the dots were no more than a visual representation of thoughtful pauses- instead of simply charging through the sentence in a mechanical manner.
It has been my experience that emails are often speed read, and only the parts that the reader wants to read do actually get read.
I am new to the forum, and I will try to toe the accepted line, although I am surprised at the size of many of the paragraphs from other contributers- I sometimes have to shake my head to remain focused.
Please do not tell me that a paragraph has to contain more than one sentence.............. or I will get so bogged down in being correct that I will- dot dot dot etc.
This is an excellent site, and as a newcomer in general to forums (fori ?) it is refreshing to exchange info and thoughts so immediately with such a wide range of persons............ H&P

Norbert........... Nice one!- I like it-......you must have slipped that one in while I was typing my response to Ed and Tictactux.
I am now thinking so hard about being correct that I am making spelinn mistaeks alover the plaice.
New paragraph... and while you are here, watch those dots....... you are slipping into a baaaaaaaaaaad habit......... (thoughtful pause)......... and here I am thinking that this site was all about fixing broken clarinets- how wrong can you be.
A Roesti? Where did you dig that up?- Swiss Haiku ?....... I must try to find a way to impress my friends with that one.
I think I will join an English literary society forum and introduce them to the correct way to replace a missing pad...... H&P

As far as I know, a roesti is a kind of fried potato cake - but you are right in thinking it comes from Switzerland!

Hashbrowns might be something you know, it's close.

That thing above must be my first Haiku ever. I admit I had more an example of self-explanatory typesetting in mind. We don't do Haikus over here, not even Limericks. Heck, what are you expecting of a sailing nation that has not an inch of shoreline.

Speaking of typesetting - one of the last free things these days is w h i t e s p a c e . A bit air around paragraphs doesn't cost anything yet adds a lot to legibility and structure.

As difficult as it is to play off a sheet crammed full of notes ("black page") it is to read posts that offer no rest for the eye.
    A real PITA.

Which just was a hapless attempt at returning to culinary exotica. [tongue]

Hi, Geirskogul,
I cannot quote your comment in case I am accused of using too many full stops. My apologies, but at first I thought there was a faulty pixel on my screen- then I wondered if I was getting spots before the eyes. So I took my medication and lo! I got the point. (groans all round).
I am glad to see that Orwell's Do(ugh)t police are still alive and on the ball.
Maybe you will all be commended for your vigilance and made up to Sergeants.
Do you have a sub-division dealing with exclamation marks!?...... H&P

This all started with what was meant to be a helpful suggestion about dull Bb.s (exclamation maaaaarghhh- slumps over keyboard) Enter Ms. Marple.

It was tictactux wot done it, Guv.
Don't give me any of that foreign stuff or I'll 'ave you.
The end (hopefuly)...... H&P

Call the violinists and see if they also play viola. A lot of them do.
