 Bonade Ligature Patent Pending inscription

Anybody have more info on the Bonade "patent pending" status?

Did it ever receive a patent??

Easy to assume that it did, but did it???

-----------------------------------------
In the United States, according to the United States Patent and Trademark Office, the expression "Patent Pending" as such does not protect an invention until the actual patent is published and/or issued:

"The marking of an article as patented when it is not in fact patented is against the law and subjects the offender to a penalty. Some persons mark articles sold with the terms "Patent Applied For" or "Patent Pending." These phrases have no legal effect, but only give information that an application for patent has been filed in the Patent and Trademark Office. The protection afforded by a patent does not start until the actual grant of the patent. False use of these phrases or their equivalent is prohibited."

A patent was issued on May 14, 1957.

"A patent was issued on May 14, 1957"

and is therefore long expired. Anyone may freely duplicate Bonade's ligature, (even using his drawings submitted to the Patent Office).

Here is a nice alternative:
http://www.musiquedemarc.com/en/index.asp

It is inverted.
The ribs that touch the reed are not metal...they seem like wood, and are set at a slant. There is a thin cork on the screw side which prevents slipping.

Disclaimer: I own one of their ligatures and like it. I did not get any freebies, etc. for this endorsement.

Cool design!

I don't like the Bonade, haven't used one for many years, but came across a couple I have and saw the patent pending (one really old Sax lig, and one newer clarinet) so wondered if it was a case of retooling, or what.

The sticks are indeed wood.
"The positioning of WOODEN STICKS to support the reed allows it to vibrate in perfect symbiosis throughout its length, providing stunning tone."
I'm sure the ligature is quite nice, but the sticks seriously just look like cut toothpicks.

Does the metal contact the side of the reed rails? It's kind of hard to tell from the picture.

I have tried putting in 2 cut up toothpicks between a Rovner Dark and a reed before to mimic the Bonade's parallel bars. They seemed to open up the sound a little, but I don't remember completely... I'll have to try again soon.

The metal does not contact the reed.
It plays like a true metal ligature.
If you favor Rovner Dark models, it is not for you.
If you like Bonade or Bay (unlined) or Spriggs, I would say it is similar in playing characteristics.

I actually do not favor the Rovner Dark too much... it feels like it's restricting me -- especially at f - ff dynamics. Also, the response seems a little slower than other ligatures.

I still like string the most so far, but I'm using a Luyben now just because I don't like tying string all the time; the Luyben also feels a bit more "open" and has better response than the Rovner.

I have tried the Bonade at a music store but not extensively since it kept slipping the mouthpiece.

Wouldn't the wood compress fairly easily on that ligature? Is it sturdy?

I would think it could compress (or break?) if you overtighten the ligature.

Maybe it is possible to see if this happens by trying to crush a toothpick between a metal ligature and a reed by tightening it.

Hi David B - You MAY have an historic lig, made before US 2,791,929 issued in 1957, congrats. For further info, go to Google Patents, search for Bonade ligature, for reading and see where 929 was cited vs later pats. Just thot that the # should be recorded here. Fun, Don

Thanx, Mark, Don
