 Noblet/Buffet hybrid?
Author: dcamocha

I am thinking of purchasing an intermediate clarinet locally and was told that the serial # is B9443. The seller advertised this as a Noblet, vintage around 1980, but thinks that this might be a Noblet/Buffet hybrid?

Before I make the trip to look at it I was wondering if anyone could give me some info or guidance about this clarinet. Thanks for taking the time to read and respond!

what markings are on the barrel, and also on the bell?

you do NOT want a hybrid composed of parts from different brands

if all the parts are marked noblet, except for the mouthpiece, thats ok.

why does he think its a hybrid?

Thanks very much for the insight. I am guessing that the hybrid comments have to do with the seller having difficulty finding information regarding the serial number. His comments regarding hybrid are as follows:

"I am not sure what the model might be. I am researching the serial number and cannot find anything. (B9443) the serial number fits the Buffet line and these companies did have a merger. If this is the case the instrument might be from before 1980. I know I bought it in 1990 already used and the shop owner told me it was from the early 80's."

I have sent a followup email to the seller and asked the questions that you have brought up. It should be interesting to see what comes of this.

I don't know what he is thinking. But 1980 is right on par in the serial number range for that SN#

and when did Buffet & Noblet have a merger ?? Noblet merged with Leblanc a very, very long time ago back in 1904.

I'm also wondering about that merger, is there a gap in my memory? Noblet has been a part of LeBlanc for a long time but it's only recently that LeBlanc has become part of Conn-Selmer and then they sold the building (Noblet) in France to Buffet. It is rumored that this building will be the new site for the student Buffet clarinets but that's the closest I know of for any sort of merger with Buffet.
Does anyone know of a merger other than that one?

there's also the B&H - Buffet merger of years past (was the Musicgroup an evolution of that ?)

but other than the past year of Leblanc USA/paris bought by Selmer USA I don't think Leblanc Paris has been owned by other companies.

I played a Noblet from 1976 to 1979. Loved it.

I recently purchased an old Noblet for a student of mine (who reimbursed me). The mom had our repair person do an overhaul and my young student has a much better clarinet than her original beginner horn.
