hey i was wondering if anyone knew the history of this brand of clarinet? the internet seems to be a bit tight lipped for me. its the A. Robert Paris clarinets. i just purchased one that looks like its been through a few world wars and plays like a dream and comes with its own leather double case! let me know if you have some info on that, i'd appreciate it.

a. robert paris is one of the most mysterious clarinet manufacterers on the market. I think he produced clarinets during the 1930s but couldn't compete with the big 4 (buffet, yamaha, selmer, leblanc) and so he stopped production. one of the major jewels is the robert mouthpieces. From what i can pick apart, they are on par with kaspar mouthpieces. only a few members can attest that as they secretly horde them.

(i have yet to try one)

I purchased a Robert in A, in Boston, around 1952. It belonged to a deceased BSO player. Marvelous instrument with silver- lined slip=joint barrel and silver-lined sockets. I played it for 30 years, and eventually gave it to the principal of the San Antonio Symphony.

thanks to both of you. now i have another question. i'd like to know where my clarinet has been in the past and i hear that i might track its history via its serial number. if this is true where on the internet (but not restricted to the internet) would i find this information out?

"I think he produced clarinets during the 1930s but couldn't compete with the big 4 (buffet, yamaha, selmer, leblanc)"

Was there a "big four" in the 1930s? Was Yamaha producing clarinets then??

You may well be correct to write that Robert was out-competed, but I doubt it was quite by the list of makers you suggest.

Larry. (But when I asked him about it a couple years ago, he did not remember what he did with it- ancient history. )

right you are. i forget that these companies didn't take into full swing until much later.
