This is a fairly obscure musical, but has anyone here played any of the reed books? Standard package has the following reed books:
Reed I (Flute, Piccolo, Clarinet, Alto Saxophone)
Reed II (Flute, Clarinet, Alto Saxophone)
Reed III (Piccolo, Clarinet, Bass Clarinet, Tenor Saxophone)
Reed IV (Clarinet, Tenor Saxophone)
Reed V (Clarinet, Alto & Baritone Saxophones)
If anyone has played the show, how heavy is the sax in books 1 & 2? This is for a small local theater production, and it may be hard to find players who can double on pic/flute/cl & various sax.
It will be a month before the books come in and we are trying to plan out the pit. Any advice on this book would be helpful!

If you have a strong "big band" sax section you will be in good shape. Get strong alto players for Reed I and II. Most sax players can handle the bits of extra woodwinds. Get a strong doubler on Reed III. Your Reed IV can be a bit week on Tenor, but should be able to handle clarinet. Reed V will require more bari skills than clarinet, and that part can totally ditch the alto if necessary. The bari is just as important as the rest of the saxes.
If you have five solid saxes and are worried about the clarinet and flute parts, you should only have to have two of each, and forget the picc - play those on flute.
If this seems complicated, be very happy that you don't have double reed parts.

Sorry - too much detail. The bottom line is that this is a sax show. If you have doublers, great. If not, get a couple of flute and/or clarinet players.

I played this show about 20 years ago. The score does a good job of reproducing the big-band sound from the 1940s. Yep, it's a sax show so if you can get five sax cats, you'll be doing well. I remember there were a lot of improvised tenor solos, so try to get someone who can blow.
