 Eb Price Range
Author: WK

Hello,

I am offered to buy a very nice Eb Prestige by Buffet from one of my colleagues. Both I and she were not sure about the ongoing price range for this instrument in excellent shape. I would appreciate if some of you who deal with them far more often to give me some suggested price for the instrument. She bought it new about four years ago, picked out of 4-5 from the Buffet in Jacksonville. Please use my email: wk07@fsu.edu. I would very much appreciate it. Thank you!

Best,
WK

The average price today is right around $5,400 for a new RC Prestige Eb (I am assuming you are talking about an RC Prestige and not the R13 Prestige). That Price is of course after the recent price increase so It probably cost around $5,000 plus or minus a bit.

I would have no idea how much its 'blue book value,' so to speak, would be today, but assuming it is a very good Eb, it may not have depreciated much in value, but then again it is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it.

Hope this helps.

Just for thought and as a possible, more affordable alternative to the Buf's, the Eb clarinetist in our orchestra is sounding absolutely great on his Partricola effer. Not a strident, but rather more "rounded" or dark than the usual Eb sound. I believe he is using a Johnson mpc with Bb reeds.

And, FWIW, he is playing it for the Carlos Chavez, "SINFONIA INDIA" this Sat. eve (hopefully to a sold-out house).

However, a Prestige selected from 4-5 others at the Buffet facility does sound like a "special" clarinet. If it suites your ear and your wallet, buy it and don't look back.

I tried several Prestige eefers when I bought mine and could've been happy with any of them. They are a bit softer than the R13's I've played and I love the intonation. These are two things I've not said about other eefers!

One thing I've added is the Fobes Eb extension. You will be surprised at how beautiful the 12ths are and the low notes seem especially good. It makes a great horn even greater. A real joy to play Eefer.

I have seen most new ones at just over $5K although I don't have any idea as to how these depreciate. I was lucky when i bought mine. The dollar was up and the franc was down!

Enjoy!

Yes--I "second" the recommendation for the Fobes effer extension. I bought mine from *the* auction site and got lucky in that it fit my Yamaha 622 Eb perfectly. Although my little clarinet already had a great sounding lower register, the extension seems to even out the upper register and produce a "mellower" tambre as well. They make great Eb soprano clarinets even better.

Since I play a Selmer Series 9 Eb clarinet (1966) Clark and I discussed on the phone about finding an Eb extension which would fit, since the bell tenon is slightly bigger than the standard R13, which his extensions are based on.

After some careful measuring (but in the end, not careful enough) Clark sent me an Eb extension to try. Unfortunately it was a bit too snug to fit on the bell tenon. Clark told me to immediately send it back and he would find (or make) a different one with a slightly more open bell receiver.

After a week, the new Eb extension arrived and it fit perfectly - like it was made for the clarinet.

As noted by others, it definitely has an effect on the resulting sound -especially the long B, C, C# (and the lower 12ths). I also found that the extension seems to round out the sound of the entire clarinet and (for lack of a better term) 'darken' to tone quality - removing some of the stridency.

After playing Eb clarinet with it on, I cannot now imagine going without using it... GBK
