The NY Philharmonic will be performing Strauss's Elektra in December.
Eight clarinetists/basset horn players are required.
Aside from the regulars (Drucker, Nuzzio, Forteza, Freeman), anyone know who else is playing (ie: the other four - 2 basset horns and 2 sopranos)?

Here's one for someone's resume.
The soprano parts are Bb 1 & 2 and A 1 & 2.
Therefore, the sub who plays clarinet 1 (really clarinet 3) can claim, in full truth, that they played principal clarinet with the NY Philharmonic!
That should open some doors......(but to where?)

It can be performed without the extra clarinets. Washington National Opera Just performed it, and opted for a more standard section, minus the basset horns and extras.

Hi All:
Yes, I was asked to play ELEKTRA with the NY Phil. but I was unable to accept the work. I was working on a new film due out in early 2009, "The Informant", a score by Marvin Hamlisch, so I had a conflict and had to make a choice...the film recording won out!
The Clarinet section for ELEKTRA is:
Drucker, Nuzzio, Forteza, Freeman (regular guys)
Plus:
Dennis Smylie & Lino Gomez (Basset Horns)
Steve Hartman & Dan Spitzer (extra Clarinets)
I hope that helps your curiosity?
Be well,
JJM
