 Little Dorrit - clarinet information
Author: Nessie1
Date:   2008-11-17 09:39

In the current BBC dramatisation of Dickens's Little Dorrit, one of the characters, Frederick Dorrit, played by James Fleet, is meant to be a clarinettist. He was shown in one of last week's episodes playing some kind of early instrument (in long shot, so he was probably miming). Does anyone know what kind of instrument this was? Or what the piece was (could have been specially composed of course but may be not)? and most intriguingly, do any of our more illustrious early clarinet-playing contributors own up to having played it, or know who did?

Thanks

Vanessa.

Well, it's your bog standard 5 keyed clarinet. It sounds like a Lefvere study and yes he's miming. I know the piece as I'm sure I've played it, I always play these studies to get back into playing the classical instrument.

Very interesting - I wonder who actually played it!

Thanks Peter

Years ago there was a famous news photo of presidential candidate Adlai Stevenson with his feet up upon his desk...most notable for displaying a big hole in the sole of his shoe! Peter has gone him one better, in a photo on his website gallery Peter has two holes in his sole.

Aside from that there's photos of three young people on the way to success as an oboe, clarinet, basson trio. Good luck to y'all.

Why thank you Old Geezer,

I'm glad you noticed the shoes, I love those shoes, they are my concert shoes. They have been to lots of places and trodded many stages but I will not get rid of them oh no, if it rains I get wet feet.

Back to the classical clarinet. I couldn't tell you who played it but I have a few guesses, it wasn't me.

Yes, it was Lefevre -- and the clarinettist was Tim Lines. He told me just a couple of days ago the story of how he came to do it; and I expect he was playing on a Bangham Grenser copy, though what the actor was playing I don't know.

I remember the 1988 film (or pair of films) of Little Dorrit. In that production, Frederick Dorrit was played by Cyril Cusack. As I recall, in most scenes, he was practicing or performing the clarinet solo from Verdi's The Force of Destiny, which figured as a motif in the films soundtrack.
