Does anyone know the meaning of the French instruction "decomposez" as used by Jeanjean in the first of the 18 Etudes (Alfred Edition)? It literally means "decompose," but I'm unclear on what it means in this musical context. My guess would be a direction to play "in 2" rather than "in 6." Can anyone confirm this?

I think it's the other way around. It means subdivide, so if you were playing in 2, you would switch to playing in 6.

In one of my Jeanjean etude books from college, I crossed out the word "decomposez" and wrote the word "rot". That seemed to fit the way I played it at the time.
