 Theme and Variations
Author: theclarinetguy

I was looking around the board and was wondering what is everyone's favorite Theme and Variation piece for clarinet. Either unaccompanied, with piano, with orchestra, with band, etc.

I personally have loved studying the Francaix - Theme and Variation. I look forward to performing it for my upcoming recital and for ICA Young Artist Competition this year.

Yep. Another vote for Rossini!

von Weber's theme and variations. He wrote these as a traveling promotion for his opera Sylvane and performed them as an "ad" with Poppa Bearmann --who might have written the slow, acrobatic movement.

It has the other advantage of being written for just piano and clarinet --no HUGE overhead like the Rossini.

Also, the Beethoven Opus 11 for piano, cello and clarinet: nine variations, not hard (but for the person stuck with the Beethoven part) and rousing, short, brilliant.Pappy wrote:

1. "Carnival of Venice", Paul Jeanjean
2. Beethoven's Trio for clarinet, cello and piano, the third movement of course.

Variaciones Para Clarinete y Piano, Velazquez

Luis Rossi (he of handmade one-piece clarinet fame) performs this on one of his CD's. I had to go to a publisher in Germany to get it, but it's different, it's fun and it's really interesting.

My program notes:
Leonardo Velazquez, is among the best-known contemporary composers in Mexico. He composed, among other things, Fanfarria played in the Olympic Games in Mexico in 1968; a ballet Fire released during the same Olympics at the pyramids of Teotihuacán and numerous film, theatre, and television scores. He was born in 1935 in the city of Oaxaca and wrote this piece in 1959.

4th movement variations of both the Mozart and Brahms Quintets.

Also, the first (?) movement of the Rosza Sonata for clarinet Solo. Not often played, but a good set of variations, very challenging and full of character.

My favorite variations are Diversions on a familiar theme for clarinet and piano or strings by Joseph Horovitz

Mozart's 2nd quintet for strings and clarinet, K. 731. Oops, he died before he could write it.

Seriously: I don't know if this counts, but the finale of Tchaikovsky's Mozartiana suite keeps the 1st clar on its toes.

All of the great works of tonal music are variations on a common theme.

The theme is "Three Blind Mice." ;)

Rossini Variations (not the Intro, Theme and Variations)... the one written for C clarinet, iirc.

Louis Cahuzac: Variations Un Air Du Pays D'oc. I've got it with piano accompaniment but the recording I've got is arranged for a concert band. They're not incredibly difficult, but alot of fun to play though Rossini's variations are my fav.

To listen: Any good music that is a theme with variations.

To play: In any moment that I am playing a theme and variations, whatever it is that I'm playing at that moment.

Two Cavallini Caprices (#19 & #22) are favorites of mine. I play them when I'm out of practice - nice and easy going music.

For similar reasons too: Beethoven's third duet for clarinet & bassoon (perhaps not by Beethoven?)
