 packing clarinets for shipment

I'm planning to have my Bb and A clarinets overhauled by Brannen. This will mean shipping the clarinets to them. Does anyone have any advice on how best to package the instruments for shipment?

I have a Pro-Tec double clarinet case that I use. I thought at first that maybe I could just package the case inside a box. But, I've been noticing that often when I open the case after carrying it to rehearsal, pieces of my A clarinet have jostled around. (For some reason, the Bb pieces seem to fit pretty snugly, but the A sections are loose around the two joints.)

Any thoughts appreciated!

I always wrap the individual pieces into wrapping tissue (or kitchen paper if nothing else is available). Prevents cork grease from smearing the case, and the joints are less likely to dance around. Plus, it buffers the humidity (you never know how cold an aircraft compartment actually is). Finally, makes a professional impression.

An appropriate thickness of bubble wrap laid on top of the instruments inside the case will help immobilize them. You could also ask the Brannens for advice. They've shipped more instruments than you can shake a stick at.

Best regards,

Just wrap them in hundred dollar bills [wink]

Ditto on the bubble wrap. Just remember that it's getting colder up here in Chicago and your package could be exposed to low temperatures.

Ship them overnight!! You don't want them hanging around at all anywhere.

I've been advised by two repairers/selectors NOT to ship by air, to send them ground UPS or FedEx --because of the nasty environments (cold, dry) in aircraft cargo compartments. Well insulated in a protec case, they probably won't cool or warm fast enough to crack in ground transport.

Couldn't hurt to put a moisture source in the case, either.

You are going over international borders. That alone could delay it a lot. That's why I suggested overnight.

The whole customs ground thing can take a really long time.

I've sent 5 clarinets to V. Krass in NJ and back (some in winter) via Express Mail from Alaska (a P.O. Box). I have usually used a big outer box with a smaller inner box containing the case and clarinet (s). For packing I've used everything from styrofoam peanuts, bubble wrap, paper towels, newspaper, plastic bags, and anything handy that filled space so the inner box wouldn't move around. There have been no problems worth mentioning.
Good Luck
