 Buffet R13 pad sizes
Author: Rob Vitale

Any one out there know the correct pad sizes in mm for a 50xxxx serial numbered buffet R13. Ebay has so awsome deals for pads, but I don't want to get stuck with the wrong sizes.

thanks

Rob,

The majority of pad sets that you might purchase on line will have some pads that do fit and others that don't come close. When I repad or even replace a few pads I remove the key and fit the pad for that key. I need to think about the travel of the key up and down, the size of the cup and the size of the well it needs to cover. There are several keys that I almost always use cork pads because they seem to be a better choice in many ways even if the rest of the pads are felt.
If you have never replaced pads before please do not start with your good clarinet, it could be under repair for a long time. If it needs to be completely repadded please ask your professor at George Mason for a good place to take it and have the job done correctly. If you wish to learn how to repad maybe they will accept you as an apprentice and you can get a side career started.
If you do purchase a set of pads you will probably get a few that will fit and if your clarinet needs only one or two replaced you could be lucky.
It's best to have every size at your fingertips before you start and that means both thick and thin size 9mm.
Good luck, I hope things go well.

My experience with Auction Site pads is mixed - often you won't get top quality.
For just a lil' more you can get a set from MusicMedic, and IME they fit. (Their Precisions run on the thin side though, compared with Pisoni's). I didn't have an R13 to repad yet, but their Bundy and Vito sets fit like a glove.

Repairers usually try a pad, based on experience, measuring, or just eyeing it, then if it's not the correct size try bigger or smaller, etc. Even same model clarinets can have slightly different key cup sizes. The pad type also matters. Sometimes even similar types will be different (for example two different models of bladder pads I've tried are always 0.5mm apart when fitting to the same key).

Not exactly. Precisions usually come in a specific size. Music Center (FKA Pisoni) are in the size that a supplier have them, but some suppliers have more than one thickness, and if you order directly from Music Center you can specify thickness.

Okay, I meant to say that MusicMedic's Precision Kits are thinner than my repairman's MusicCenter Kits (which come prepacked with a MC label).

Buffet use much thinner pads than most clarinets, so they should be fine.

Or you can phone Ferrees and just tell them what you want. They might offer you options.
