A friend is looking for a piece for clarinet, violin and orchestra. Does anyone know of any good works for this combination?

Luciano Berio's Concertino from 1951 is written for concertante solo clarinet and violin with a chamber ensemble consisting of celesta, harp and strings. A wonderful piece!

I would consult with Elsa-Ludwig Verdehr and search under her trio. I am sure that something has been written for her and her husband and she chooses very good composers for commissions.

Make the fiddle player switch to viola and play Bruch ;)

About a dozen works for orchestra with clarinet and violin (some with piano soloist too) are listed at the Verdehr Trio's website:

Just 2 ClarFests ago (Vancouver) there was a premiere (?) of a work with Clarinet, Violin with Orchestra that Elsa and Walter Verdehr performed.

Cool work

If you are going to convert your fiddler to a violist, take a look/listen to Mozart's Kegelstat Trio, K 498. Wonderful stuff!

Maybe you could do the Bach concerto for oboe & violin with clarinet on the oboe part?

Maybe you could have someone transcribe a clar/vn/pno piece for clar/vn/orch? But I'm sure that idea has more copyright problems than you can shake a baton at.

Stamitz' Concerto No. 4 is for clarinet, violin and orchestra. (There is an alternate version for 2 clarinets and orchestra.) Playing the Kegelstat would not only require changing the violin to viola, it would require changing the orchestra to piano.

Best regards,
jnk
