 summer program questions/experiences
Author: reprise

I'm investigating summer programs for adults, and already did a search on this bb. I'd like to know if anyone has attended either:

- The Chamber Music Conference and Composers' Forum of the East (Bennington, Vermont)

- Summerkeys (Lubec, Maine)

Also, I've seen a lot of info on summer chamber music programs and summer band programs for adults. But, does anyone know of any summer orchestral programs for adults?

Thanks!

What about Midsummer Music Retreat? Dr. Anthony Taylor teaches there and he's a great guy.

The MMR http://www.musicalretreat.org/ does have an orchestra but the wind players are selected via a lottery. You have about a 30% chance of playing in it. All the winds play in the band. Also, the camp has gotten so big that enrollment is limited (~250) so you better sign up in January and send them a deposit. The camp is at Whitman College http://www.whitman.edu/content/ in Walla Walla, WA, a great town if you love to taste wine. Anthony teaches there every summer, check him out here http://www.uncg.edu/mus/faculty/woodwind.html

Here is another camp for adults in Vancouver, BC http://www.wcams.com/camp2008/index.html

And if money is no object how about http://www.ischiafestival.it/ Ken Woods told me it was a great gig and I should try to go next year. Check his blog from last May for more details http://kennethwoods.net/blog1/

Greetings,

There is also the Composers Conference and Chamber Music Center at Wellesley College in Wellesley, MA. www.composersconference.org.

I didn't attend the Bennington forum, but I did attend the Composers Conference years ago when it was being held in Johnson, Vt.

Just for the record, I am a member of WCAMS which was mentioned in the second reply. The dates on the website are for this past summer, but the dates for camp next summer are July 19-July26.

Marcia, have you ever attended the WCAMS summer camp? What is it like? Although I lived in White Rock for many years I never met anyone who had gone and my music teacher at the time knew absolutely nothing about it.

Yes I have attended the WCAMS summer camp. If you contact me directly I would be happy to discuss it with you.

I've attended an adult music camp held at the end of June in Ashland OH the last two years. It's a 3- or 4-day band program with no auditions. Perhaps 50 or so participants. On-campus housing is available as it's held on the campus of Ashland University. It's $195 for the 4-day program.

I've attended SummerKeys for about five years. The clarinet teacher is excellent. Skills of the students vary widely -- from complete beginners up to more advanced players. To be honest, though, I go as much for the beautiful scenery and excellent hiking as for the music. :) Email me at mcheatham@pobox.com if you want more info.
