 Whence Rose 21 of 40
Author: Bob Phillips

Just started workin' on the No. 21 of the Rose 40, and it is reminding me of some other piece that I've played in the past. Perhaps, a duo, with this version demanding that a single player cover both parts --shortening notes that just ask to be lingered over.

Anyone here point me to a source for this etude?

Thanks

Bob Phillips

No. 21 of the Rose 40 was composed by Jacques Mazas, a French violinist who lived in the first half of the 19th century.

5 of his pieces are in duet form and found in the "31 Selected Duets", book 2, compiled by Jay Arnold (Edward Schuberth & Co.).

Although some of these are written in 6/8 and are similar in style to #21 in the Rose book, I have not encountered the one you are inquiring about in duet form.

All I know is that the original was supposed to be written for violin by
Jacques Fereol Mazas (click link for details about him and his works).

Well, that's not entirely true. I also know it was All-State tryout music in Texas some time between 1990 and 1992. :)

According to Wikipedia, he wrote violin etudes, but also wrote some duos for his students. Maybe this an "etude version" of one of the duos.

Thank you. I'd been thinkin' that it could have been an exercise in Langenus Book ii or iii, and he did use quite a bit of Mazas.
