What is french cement made of?
Author: stebinus

Because of my hypoallegies I'm running into problems with adhesive pellets and possibly stick shellac so I'm wondering if french cement might work better for me. Also can anyone tell me if the amber and clear stick shellacs like those from Music Medic are made from the insect secretions or are either or both synthetic?

Depending on your allergies shellac may or may not be an allergen. It apparently is still made from the resinous secretions of the Lac insect but is generally considered non-toxic because it is used in candy coatings and other food processing tasks to add a shiny surface. The technical guys can give you more on French cement also many hot glues are sythethic polymers.

There's probably worse than bug excreta used to fertilize some of the vegatables you eat.

Thanks Omar. Lately I've been using clear shellac and it's better than the pellets but still not sure about it. Yes please anyone let me know what the french cement is too. Been having a hard time getting that info.

Ferree's tools would know and they are always nice enough to tell you, too. www.ferreestools.com
Also, hot glue gun sticks can be used for pads. If that is ok for you or not, I don't know, but it's an option.

Isn't French cement the same as clear/amber shellac but with white colouring?

I'm pretty sure hot glue is a problem and Music Medic told me it's the same material that the pellets are made of.

The cream coloured French cement sticks are shellac based.

Thanks Gordon. Saved me a call. Know anything about how they get clear shellac?

Lac bug secretions - not poop, purified, dissolved in alcohol poured into mold, alcohol removed = clear shellac stick (colorant added = yellow, orange stick)

i read on another board last year that orange/amber shellac is based on the type of tree sap the beetle feeds one.

Then they take that shellac and "bleach" it to get white shellac which is opposite what Omar mentions. Not sure about the other colors.

fyi, I still call it bug poop =-)

There is organic coloration due to diet of the Lac but only harvested in small quantities for purists and super expensive so most colored shellac sticks are clear plus some colorant.
The secretions are analogous to spider web secretions which I would not call poop but Steve if you must ...

In the UK, amber shellac is usually called 'transparent' even though it's amber shellac. But it is transparent - only it's transparent amber. Whenever transparent shellac has been ordered it's always amber, but this is only used to stick brown leather and cork pads in with - white shellac is used on skin and white leather pads.

But the clear shellac supplied by MusicMedic looks like glass which must be really purified to get all the colour out. Does it have exactly the same properties as amber and white shellac?

Odd that it is called transparent when it is translucent.

The French glue sticks are opaque.

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shellac :

"... Orange shellac is bleached with sodium hypochlorite solution to form white shellac and also is produced in wax-containing and wax-free form. "

From http://www.answers.com/topic/shellac :

"...Shellac that is bleached (or made into clear shellac) are dissolved in sodium carbonate and centrifuge to remove insolubles and then bleached with sodium hypochlorite."

I read all the posts/answers here about French Cement. It just never ceases to amaze me at the font of intelligent information here on this board.

If I've said it once I'll say it again. "You people here are way over my head." Me? I'm just a plain Ol' country boy who blows a little wind into the the hollow tube with holes in it that they call a "Screech Stick".

Thank you Gordon and all - I now know more than I ever wanted to know about shellac. My own use of shellac sticks was in the furniture refinishing business which calls mostly for a transparent application and different colorant uses but there are obviously different preparation techniques used for other applications.
