 What is this?

I got this at an auction thinking that my son could play it but he wanted to play the violin instead . Please help me identify it.

The only markings I can find on it are a diamond that says D. Noblet Paris in it on the bell.

From the looks I'd say it's a clarinet. :-)

Jokes aside, it's a Noblet, part of the Leblanc family (which in turn is part of the Conn-Selmer imperium), they came in various shapes and under various other vendor names. Generally considered good instruments.

I have a Noblet stencil sold by Rauber (aka Selmer Montreux), and occasionally use it for birthday gigs and other show-off opportunities. When restored properly, they don't sound all bad - some people easily confuse their sound with a wooden or hard rubber clarinet...

Check out http://www.clarinette-metal.fr/galerie_de_photos.htm, the Noblets are near the end of the page.

As I understand, there were metal Noblet clarinets made for a substantial amount of time and most were of above average metal clarinet quality. Apparently the ones with the diamond on the bell are from the best era for these.
