 Molter for Eb
Author: srattle

Hello,
Does anyone know where I could find a piano transcription of the Molter Concerti but for Eb clarinet, rather than D?

Thanks a lot!

Yes, there are two available that I know, the 1st and 3rd concerti.

They're quite good, and a useful contribution to the Eb clarinetist's recital repertoire.

But be aware that it is the accompaniment, not the solo part that has been transposed.

In most circles, it is considered very bad form to take a standard work to a pianist after transposing it --demanding that the pianist re-learn the work.

It is also a bummer to have to move to a different key, re-learn all the pinky tangles and alternate fingerings.

I guess the only sensible thing to do here is to go blow $5000 on a D clarinet and spend a couple months getting a mpc to work with it.

The chances of a pianist being already familiar with the Molter concerti are a tad slim don't you think?

Ha! Advantage for the digital piano. We can transpose ours by +- half an octave up and down, in half tone steps (plus the usual 440..442 tweaks).

Of course, I can't imagine a DP being played in concert, or am I wrong?

Interestingly enough, there is actually such a thing as a "transposing piano" (a "real" one with strings). They're rare, of course, but Irving Berlin owned one (an upright model). On a transposing piano, there is a mechanism that allows you to slide the keyboard to the left or right relative to the strings and hammers.

Oh, I agree that one is unlikely to run into a casual pianist with Molter already under his/er fingers.

here'bouts only a few venues have string-banging pianos that are player friendly and in-tune, so the electronic keyboards occasionally get dragged along to recitals.

I've used the Molter #1 and #4 (my favorite) for auditions on Eefer without any accompaniment. The only problem with the Molter pieces is that they really don't utilize any of the low notes on the Eefer. In fact, during one of the auditions, one member of the jury asked me "what is the lowest note you played?". Have been trying to get #6 but can't find the parts.

Here are a couple others that are actually written for Eb that exploit a bit more of the range and show some of the other personalities of the Eefer:

Dorff Dance Music. This is a fun piece that is supposed to be a story of a mouse dancing various dances. It ends in a death scene for the poor mouse, with EEfer hitting a high Ab. Your lip might be giving out by then!

Bolcom. Little Suite of Four Dances. A nice mix of styles and range. My favorite movement is one that sounds like Autumn Leaves. I use a lot of vibrato on that movement as it seems to fit.

Cavallini. Carnival of Venice Variations. If you want to show off your flying fingers, this is the one.

Panazzi. Ballabile con variazoni. This is my favorite Eefer solo. A very pretty piece and with a lot to show your technical ability. It feels like a Rossini overture in some parts.

Casas. Aires Sicillianos. This is a fun piece and one that has a good portion in the lower notes in the taratella portion. It is very effective.

If any of you have others I would be interested in hearing what the rest of you like or comments on any of these. Some of our dealer members have these pieces.

Blackwood, Sonatina for Eb Clarinet and Piano -- based on a quick scan I find only one altissimo note in the whole piece (D6).

Jack,

You're right on the Blackwood. It is pretty piece of music too. Bruce Yeh did a nice recording of it too on one of his CD's. I have a Garlick piece too that stays in the mid-range too but I don't care for it. Thse two are sort of the oposite of the Molter pieces!

I played the Panizza on a doctoral recital this past March, and it's a ton of fun (and pretty flashy)! I ordered the music from Gary VanCott less than a year ago, so I'm betting that he will still have it available on his website.

I was searching for something else and came across this thread. I have also transcribed the accompaniment to Molter #2 and #4, so the clarinet part remains as written. Let me know if anybody is interested in this.

I will also confirm that the Panizza is through Gary VanCott. He may not have it right away but he will order it for you if you are willing to wait. Extremely fun piece to play.
