Hi, everyone. I'm new to the forum, and am trying to find information about youth orchestras between/around the trenton, nj and philedelphia, pa areas.

All suggestions are greatly appreciated!

I work for NY Youth Symphony. There are several programs available: Orchestra, Chamber music, Jazz and a composition program called Making Score. The orchestra performs 3 times a year at Carnegie Hall and is tuition free. The other programs at NYYS are tuition free, but do have certain materials related fees.

We just started the season (Auditions are in Sept - mid Oct.) and are open to kids 12-22. Unfortunately all of the programs are full at the moment...but check the website NYYS.org throughout the year for any openings in the orchestra. Occasionally kids have to drop the program mid season.

About 14 years ago I participated in Philadelphia Youth Orchestra and 16 years ago I was accepted into NJYouth Symphony, but couldn't participate. PYO was open to 22, but I think NJYS is only open to grade 12. Their program requirements may have changed since I was involved, so check out their websites.

All three programs are great musical experiences for young musicians.

Princeton youth Sym, Phila. Youth Orchestra, Phila young artists orchestra.

Princeton is your best bet for close proximity.

Sheri Apgar is the teacher to go to if you don't have one who's very good. She is close to you.

Also Settlement Music School has a chamber music program which is on Saturdays. Its at the Queen street Curtis branch.

Very good program, but very strict.

Thanks for all of the suggestions! They were all really helpful.

I've been a lurker for a long time here, and I'm glad that I finally decided to register and become a member of the bboard.
