 F. Barbier Paris

I just picked up a clarinet that is marked F. Barbier Paris.

Does anyone know anything about this model? Maker? I would assume that it is one made by selmer. Needs a major tune up, some keys out of alignment, and pads.

This looks like a good project for me. I wanted a new horn and if this plays well after I tune it up, then I'm all set!

I'll take pictures and post them later.

I searched on this BB and found some niformation

This horn is wood, and does not have Selmer imprinted anywhere on the instrument. The only other marking i found is on the top of the right hand joint and it is the number "6"

I believe it was Selmer's student model prior to WW2.

Yes. I have a 1931 Selmer catalogue that lists the Barbier as Selmer's lowest-priced student clarinet that year. I own a silver-plated metal one from about that vintage. I gather it was a fairly popular model, since it stayed in the catalogue for a number of years. For a cheap clarinet, it's not bad. I decided to keep it.

Can you make a copy of the listing for this model? Or tell me where i can get a copy of that catalogue? I like to have as much information as i can. I'm getting ready to order all the parts I need to bring it back to playing condition. I'm still trying to decipher whether to give it a bore oil treating or not before i reassemble it.

Barbier was an independent maker until 1905 when Selmer acquired them (see www.selmer.fr "from the origins until 1939"). I believe they retained a separate factory even into the years where Barbier was the bargain brand in Selmer catalogs.

At the end, the Barbier clarinets were no longer marked Paris. I've heard one of these described as being identical to an early Signet, so it seems that the Barbier name went from being on the bottom-shelf instruments of Selmer Paris to briefly being on the top-shelf instruments of Selmer USA.

The old Selmer catalogue isn't in print. I found it at a flea market. I can try to make PDF copies of the clarinet pages, though I haven't had a lot of luck with my cheapware PDF program in Vista. I can't do it for a couple of weeks, though, because I'm swamped with election stuff right now and will be travelling from a couple of days after the election until about the 20th.

I have an F. BARBIER sax-oboe. It is in the original case (a case designed specifically
for a sax-oboe), and it has a SELMER metal escutcheon name plate on top of the
lid. So, I assume BARBIER was to SELMER as PAN AMERICAN was to CONN...
