 High note help

I'm pretty new at playing clarinet. You may have seen one of my other posts. I'm to the point where 'm learning higher notes, only I can't seem to play C or above. I can barely get it out maybe half of the time. Also for some reason my tone sounds crappy, it sounds rough like sax... yes I'm a former sax player. Any helo anyone can provide I'll be more than happy to try it.

I'm using a Vito II mouthpiece and Populaire 2.5 reeds.

...Sound: Long notes help. Really. Take your time to shape those waves. Long notes will also build up your chops, which are required for...
...High notes: Give your lipth a chance. They will take you to the C and further up, but this requires patience and diligent practice. You can't force it, but you can support it.

Last: be sure your instrument is in good repair. Just as a sax will warble on low notes, a clarinet will punish you with the high'uns when it's not in fine shape.

Good luck...

ugh I dunno what it is. Maybe it's my background in trumpet telling me to tighten my jaw or soemthing... I can squeak them out maybe half of the time, but it seems I can't even get air through the mouthpiece. i guess Im pushing too hard with my bottom lip or something? Is this the break everyone talks about being tough to get over? i can play everything up to "B" no problem. but "B" and up are killing me. I practice like 2+ hours a day, and it's just frusterating to get stuck like this. I know I'll get it eventually, and any help you all can offer is much appreciated. Thanks for taking the time to read this and help if you can :)

Tightening the jaw is the wrong thing to do. The mouthpiece should float firmly, yet freely, within the lips. You should be able to control how much and where you let the reed vibrate with small, sometimes-unconscious muscle movements, not with the jaw or teeth. Also, what strength of reeds/how open is the mouthpiece that you use?

Are you playing Bass clarinet or what?

I'm playing regular Bb Clarinet(Vito 7214). using a Vito II mouthpiece and Populaire 2.5 reeds.

I think that answers your questions :)

Joe

The space between the mouthpiece and reed seems quite small. if that helps.

Put a sheet of paper between the reed and the mouthpiece and try using that spot for placement of your lower lip.
