 Yamaha Custom Joint Length?
Author: Neal Raskin
Date:   2008-11-01 14:49

A friend of mine plays on a Yamaha Custom Bb clarinet. The upper joint is longer than standard upper joints and the barrel is really short.

why did yamaha do this?

BTW, he is always flat, so finding a shorter barrel isn't even an option because the barrel on there now is shorter than any barrel size available. Obviously, one could be custom made... but why??

he is now considering buying a Buffet to match the rest of the section anyway.

Actually, Yamaha makes various barrels for these clarinets, so he could get a shorter barrel if he needs to. I believe that WW&BW stocks some of them (or at least used to stock them). Beyond that, there is also the custom barrel route. So as you see, he may not have to be assimilated by the Buffet version of the BORG. [rotate] (BTW... I play both Buffet and Leblanc instruments.

The difference in the lengths of the upper joint and the corresponding difference in barrel length comes from differences in design philosophy. From what I have read, the folks at Yamaha feel that this design gives better response and sound color or intonation for the throat tones. If your friend is using a Yamaha CSG, have him check out these barrels: http://www.wwbw.com/Search.list?N=61&Ntt=Yamaha+Tuning+Barrel

Sounds like he's got the CSG - the joint lengths on these clarinets are very different to 'standard' clarinets in that Yamaha have made the joint lengths more like German clarinets with a long top joint and a significantly short barrel in comparison to the SEV and AEV Custom series clarinets which have traditional joint lengths.

Though they still have a French bore as opposed to a German bore.

If he's always flat, how about getting a different mouthpiece that will bring his pitch up, or (for a much lower cost) having his mouthpiece shortened at the tenon end?

It is not too difficult to shorten a barrel. Most techs can do it.

Yamaha Custom clarinets use German style barrels. Barrels for german clarinets can be used for these. Also, (I have been told by someone in Yamaha design) barrels for C clarinet can be used.

Sounds like a different mouthpiece is in order..? Also maybe some people are playing pretty sharp and that can sound quite dramatically different from someone exactly in tune or slightly low.

Chris P is correct. It's a CSG model which has a longer upper section. I have a Custom CS which uses more standard length barrels. I use my Buffet barrels all the time.
