 E-flat Clarinet - G# fingering?!?
Author: Jamie Dunlop
Date:   2000-10-03 00:50

I am in a precarious predicament.
I'm playing the E-flat Clarinet part of Mahler's 1st symphony, and it frequently calls for a high G-sharp, four ledger lines above the staff. I cannot for the life of me figure out what the fingering for this note is...
I'm playing the piece in November! Help, please!

Thank you.

Try Left hand thumb on back hole and register key...all left hand fingers off.
Right hand ..all fingers down this works fine on my tuning meter.

I have a few,
1. LH thumb on back hole & register key, and 2nd & 3rd fingers down +
RH 1st & 3rd down + pinky on C# key.

2. LH thumb on back hole & register key, pinky on c# /g# key +
RH index finger on Bb /Eb side trill key, & pinky on Eb / G# key.

3. LH thumb on back hole & register key, no other fingers down except RH index finger on either one or two of the side trill keys (eg Bb /Eb tr key or add the next one up if this doesn't speak too well).

4. LH thumb on back hole & register key, add middle finger +
RH middle finger and pinky on Eb /G# key. If this isn't up to pitch you can experiment by adding a side trill key or LH side Ab (throat note Ab).

I hope these will help you.
Good luck, Alisha! :-)

Unfortunately none of the fingerings mentioned above work very well in context. The figure is written 16th-notes in t:o 104-112: f#-g#-d#-g#, f#, f#-g#-d#-g#,f#, ---------I usually play this like:
f#; LH. reg+hole, middle. RH. middle and ring. No Ab/Eb-key.
g#;LH. reg+hole, middle and ring, long f#/c#. RH. index. No Ab/Eb-key.
d#; regular fingering.
This works very well if the mouthpiece/reed setup is heavy enough to play this high. This is a famous spot and I have given it a few hours over the years. I have colleagues who swich to D-clarinet shortly before this spot.

Good luck,
Alphie

D-Clarinet? arn't those.. extinct or something?

anyhow, there's about 11 fingerings for G#.. i'll try and give you the easiest ones..

from fingering the F#, you should be able to just push the 2nd (F# semi-lower octive) key and it should jump up to G#, you could also goto the fork fingering which would be kinda' a pain to do in 16th notes.. bah! i haven't played Eb in a loooonngg... time.. i hope this helps..

Get yourself the Peter Hadcock book on E flat playing, the guy is a genius, there are a million fingerings, and excerpts. That book is my bible!

It's called "Orchestral Studies for the Eb Clarinet" by Peter Hadcock. Published by Roncorp, $18.00
