I hear great things about the Yamaha YCL-20 clarinet for beginners, but I currently have an immaculate YCL-23 (23N), and I was wondering if a YCL-20 would be an upgrade at all. Does it follow a normal naming convention and it would be a downgrade? Or would it be an upgrade?
EDIT: I also have the option of getting a YCL-24II clarinet that also looks damned near brand new, and plays pretty well (for all the good I can do testing it, I'm not the best at playing yet) for less than the YCL-20. Both are in equal condition. Thoughts on this?

In a nutshell, all Yamaha clarinets beginning with '2' are plastic bodied entry-level instruments, so you aren't really progressing up the range by getting another 20 or 200 series clarinet if you already have one.
But if you like these clarinets and want a plastic clarinet as a back-up when you get a wooden one, then you can't go wrong with them.

I don't think it's worth getting unless it's EXTREMELY cheap. I wouldn't really consider it an upgrade or a downgrade. They're probably on equal-ish levels.
I also believe the 24II is a "big bore" clarinet, just to let you know.

Pawn shop has a YCL-52 for $250, looks pretty good, but they probably don't know what it is because the logo is rubbed off of the front, or else it would probably be more expensive. I had to hold it up to the light and read the grooves to figure that one out.
