 Studying overseas
Author: Alisha

Hi everyone! At the moment I'm in my third year of a Bachelor of Music (in Australia) majoring in clarinet of course and I'll most likely be doing another year in performace next year. I would love to travel overseas to further my studies after this but I honestly don't know where I want to go! Many people have suggested that I study in America or Germany/U.K. I know there are many great teachers out there but does anyone know from experience which clarinettist/s are the best? I know everyone has different tastes but some/any suggestions would be great. If you know there full name and which university/state they are in, I would greatly appreciate it!
Thanking you all in advance.
P.s. This site is REALLY cool!

Hi Alisha! Welcome to the BBoard. I would usually be the first to welcome you to the UK, where I'm from, but that would be silly since I think that this country is rather dull.
Sorry, but I can't really help you any further on this one - just welcoming you here!
DLE, in a hurry to leave.

Leesh!

Fantastic to hear from you. Mate, go for it! I'm having a ball over here! My teacher Tim Lines is great, and he's already got me thinking. I think you just really have to go for it. This exchange caper really is the way to go, as I have it the easiest of all the Aussies here, but to really meet a lot of teachers you have to go to one of the clarinetfests, where I met mine. Don't let lack of money put you off, I just got a £2000 grant from the AMF, and although I'm really strapped for cash at the moment, because it is taking a while for my bank account to be set up, once I get settled in I'll be fine.

Col,

I think you need to be pretty bloody good to get an exchange to America. What unis are participating in the exchange? I myself was a finalist in the instrumental final of the ABC YOung Performers Awards, came second in the INternational Clarinet Association Young Artist Competition held in America, have performed concerto with Symphony Orchestras and been in National Academy, so I suggest you start practising. Have you read my article in the Australian clarinet magazine, the best way to meet Us teachers is to go to a clarinetfest, the next one of which will be held in New Orleans in August next year, that's where I met the teacher I will be studying with when I finish the exchange here. You also have to think about funding right now, QE2 Trust, Churchill, they're pretty thin on the ground, and generally they give them to singers, pianists and violinists, I didn't even get one! I'm just lucky I have a UK passport and can work over here to supplement my income.

If you have more questions, email me on kwilliams@rcm.uk
