Hi
I play (Boehm) Bb and Bass, and I have just bought an old Eb with excellent wood, but needs total overhaul and has disgusting mouthpiece. It is German, marked Caradl, and main distinguishing key features are : rollers on little finger long keys, the Register key curls round but not to front ( as a Simple System) but to half way up left side.
I'd be interested in knowing what key system it is, but real questions are :
1/ Are there any fingering charts ? eg : any alternative fingerings I might not work out by myself ?
2/ Any Tutor books preferably in English, but I could probably do the German if well illustrated.
3/ When I'm ready to buy a Eb mouthpiece, I guess the huge majority will be built for Boehm. Is it OK to use a Boehm, just to ensure the bore diameter is OK, or are there other dangers for intonation ?
4/ ps : since it doesnt play at present, and I once heard that there was a clarinet in D it might even not be Eb ! Its just over 15.75 inches to top of barrel, 19.75 inches including mouthpiece.
If you can help, thanks

"Caradl" were made by Adler (Markneukirchen) and were fairly basic German system clarinets (may have the same keywork as this Amati Eb: http://www.amati.cz/english/production/instruments/Files/acl/german/acl_246g.htm). You'll probably do better to get a German Eb mouthpiece, though try a French Eb one to see if it works. But soak the existing mouthpiece in vinegar and rinse it well (in cold to lukewarm water if it's ebonite or wood) to get all the crud off it.
You will find either a German or simple (Albert) system fingering chart will be ideal for these - there are fingering charts for simple/German/Oehler system online which you can print out.
Here's one (scroll down for Albert/Oehler):http://www.wfg.woodwind.org/clarinet/
I've got an Adler "Caradl" Bb which has a lovely tone (much fuller than the Yamaha Oehler I've got) though the keywork is far more basic (like this Amati http://www.amati.cz/english/production/instruments/Files/acl/german/acl_242g.htm) and some keys have been removed such as the side Eb/Bb and the LH Ab/Eb - I made the latter, but the side Eb/Bb key is a trickier affair due to it's design and a Boehm side key won't do (though it's not impossible to make one from scratch).

Are you actually in Worthing (as it says "ISP in Worthing")?

Once again, thanks Chris for identifying it. As you thought it is extremely similar to the Amarti 246S picture. The only diffs I can see is that mine has a vent hole(?) with its key cap attached to the ring system for rt fingers 2 and 3, ( offset between holes for rt finger 1 and 2) which the 246S lacks. This cap is shown on the Bb 242 pictures.
Any idea why the low C# key (on a Bb) has got a spur on it which ( the spur) goes over the joint ring but never touches it ?
I've got it to play a bit and it is definitely pitched in Eb not D or other exotic key.
Now to show it to my repair man and try to limit the laughter !

So you can finger the C#/G# with your RH index finger.

The Amati has the B/F# vent tucked away on the side (rather than soldered to the RH2 ring as most makers would probably do), like the F# vent on cors anglais which is closed by RH 2 and 3.
