Hello. I'm an eighth grader and I have a Buffet B-12 clarinet. I am in a local orchestra and they are having auditions for first and second chair. I have hardly any trouble playing the music, but all the other clarinetists have E-11s and I think one has an Evette. I was wondering if the bore of my B-12 stands any chance against their E-11 bores. Thanks!

Hi Benny! One of my eighth grade students also owns a B-12, and honestly I prefer the sound of his instrument to my old E-11. I suppose in auditions it's all up to personal taste but if you practise hard and nail the pieces I'm sure you'll get noticed. Just focuse on yourself (don't be intimidated by the other players) and always try to play your best. When I was in grade eight playing on a plastic vito, I still beat other students playing on wooden Buffets. Good luck for your audition, I hope everything goes well for you.

i really dont think that it matters that much as long as you can play technically and muscially. i firmly beleive that the player makes the instrument sound good not the other way around well good luck and do you best

There's limit to everything, though. If all things are equal (they seldom are, but ...) the clarinetist that sounds better will get the position. A clarinet can be a limiting factor (no matter what it's made of).

Yep, they're all right...it's not the clarinet that makes the player and all that Wow, Alisha, your story sounds so similar to me, when I was in 7th, I auditioned for the 8th grade select band with a plastic Vito clarinet. I ended up being about in the middle of the 2nd clarinet row, beating all those other 8th graders. And I like the B12 more than the E11 because my teacher says the B12 has the same bore as the R13 (no, I can't really confirm this, it's just what he says).

Yeah, Alisha you're absoulutely right! Not bad. - I remeber when I first got my E-11 clarinet and it sounded awful for the first year! What did the trick for me was to get a Selmer mouthpice and......
Anyway, Benny - cross your fingers (though not whilst playing), and hope that the others have really bad sounding, new E-11 clarinets like mine!

Well.. i have mixed feeling on what all of you have said! woO! anyhow.. i currently play an E-11, it's pretty nice, when you want it to be. but i also play an old metal Holtin, when you want, you can play the holtin better than the buffet.. persanaly i think it's all in the head, when your on a 'bad' clarinet, and your thinking about it, it's gonna sound bad, but if you don't think about what clarinet your using, you can make it sound almost perfectly like a E-11 or R-13, whatever, well.. as mark said.. there are meny limitations on A clarinets.. hehe, anyone know how to get that B (3rd line) in tune?
