I just purchased an antique rosewood clarinet that hopefully will play
pretty good but I want to get it tuned up and padded to make it sound best.
I am having a hard time finding any info about the brand though. Originally I thought it was selmer, but the seal states that it is "Henri Martinique Paris"
the serial number is 2015, I'm interested in the age and history of the company.
Any help would be appreciated, thank you!

Thanks, I'm still waiting to get the clarinet in the mail. Hopefully I will be able to find more markings or clues as to it's origin.
Does anyone know of any Selmer clarinets that have Martinique marked anywhere? Also, the auction I won had "selmar" listed as well. unknown if that is helpful or not.

I confirmed with the seller that it is a SELMER and not "SELMAR". He still hasn't given me what series it is, but can anyone tell where 2015 falls in terms of age, or am I waiting on the series letter?

No, and it wouldn't make any sense. for a Selmer clarinet. If it said "Henri Selmer, Paris" and then had a "Martinique" label as a model then perhaps ...

I agree, Mark, making a few Google/AOL searches, I tried "Martinique clarinet" and the best info was Wikipedia, [Mar.{a Fr Carib. island} music] where cls were used often. So, I incline to the thought that this is a "stencil" name used by a 1950-60 cl seller. Perhaps a small FR cl maker? Just guesswork, GBK. Don
Thanx, Mark, Don

I'm quite sure Selmer never used the name Martinique. The only Selmer (Paris) stencils known to me are Bundy, Raymond, Barbier and (I think) Alexandre.
Most likely it'll turn out that the mouthpiece or some other accessory is marked Selmer.

Thanks guys, I'll update when I actually get the clarinet. Hopefully I can get a little history on it. I think definitely the mouthpiece is a selmer, he said it was a goldtone, think he meant goldentone.

I have a "Henri Martinique" clarinet. My parents obtained it for my brother to use in about 1960. I don't know if it was new or used.
It is wood. I posted a similar question a year or two ago. The response suggested it was a stencil, or one of many clarinets from a variety of French manufacturers back then. There was no definitive link to a manufacturer; nobody seemed to have ever heard of it. It played well at the time; I was first chair in the honor band with it in 6th grade, about 1967. I've been reconditioning it with olive oil. It is a smaller bore than my son's Vito, purchased 3 years ago.

Thanks!
I did receive the clarinet, and it looks like it's in fantastic condition (although it needs a major tuneup). It's nice to hear it's not the only one around.
The mouthpiece was indeed a selmer, the case was actually buffett.
My thought is that it's older because it has the tonehole in the joint between the two main sections (not normally found on newer clarinets?)
