 Fobes SF MP Sizes

I have been searching around and compiling a list of new mouthpieces to try, and the Clark W Fobes San Francisco is on it. On his site, he has a chart listing the sizes of all the different types of facings, except for one, the OM* Kaspar 11. Does anyone know what the sizing is on it? Specifically the tip opening?

Clark makes great mouthpieces. It may be around 1.00 from what I recall. Your best bet is to contact Clark. He is great about answering all correspondence. If you tell him what your needs are he can let you know what might be a good fit.

Muncy Winds (who usually have quite a few in stock and are great people to deal with) may also be able to provide this information.

Ed’s contact advice is good, that way you will get a correct answer. It is my belief that when a MP maker puts a number on it like 11 or 13 that refers to a thousand on a MM. Though I know not everyone uses the same measurement system. I’m far from an expert on this matter so don’t take it as gospel. I do believe that an 11 indicates and medium tip opening, .98 to 100.3 or 4 would be a closed facing and up from there, medium close, medium etc.but as I said, everyone doesn’t use the same numbering system. Remember too, the tip opening is only one measurement you should be concerned about; there are many others that make a mouthpiece play the way it does. Try before you buy. ESP

Ed P. makes a very good point. The tip opening is only one factor. Facing length, bore, baffle, rail thickness, etc. are all factors that can have a great effect in the response. I have played mouthpieces over the years which feel completely different than what the numbers might suggest.

In addition, while the some measurements may be the same, I have known various makers whose tip gauges all vary. Therefore, one person's 100 may be another person's 102 or 104.

Those numbers are a good starting point, but the best way to know for sure is by playing.

Email him! I've done so several times in the past year with questions about his mouthpieces (I own a SF CF+). Just a few weeks ago i had a terrible incident which broke my CF+...I emailed him asking if there was anything he could do to help, and he replied within a few hours. I was impressed at the prompt response.

Thanks for all the advice. I was definitely planning on trying it out, along with a few others. I will drop him an email and see what he says. The reason why I am mainly concerned with the tip opening is I am looking for a MP that will allow me to play harder reeds. I understand other measurements are equally important, but those can be easily gauged in a trial. Thanks again for the help!

Why do you desire to play harder reeds ?
