Conn 424 Armored out of tune
Author: Clarsax

Hi to everyone,
after replacing some pad here and there, I've tried to play my Armored Conn 424 acquired recently
It play correctly but there is something strange to my ears...
to say that it play sharp is nothing... my chromatic tuner confirm...
At 440, it play a sharp (yes, again!!) semitone up!!
practically the F it is a sharp (!!) F# etc.
I've checked the length of the clarinet (that appear never modified)
and found the same length of a standard Bb clarinet
I've checked also the barrel, it appear in original conditions but it is a length of 59mm only...

Someone can tell me if it is the original condition for this clarinet?

Many thanks!!

Is every note a semitone sharp, or mainly the left hand notes?

A 59mm barrel is very short by wooden-bodied Boehm system standards (and long by Oehler system standards), the usual length of a Boehm barrel being 66-67mm on a wooden clarinet - though for metal clarinets, barrels could be any length due to the method of construction.

Is this the 'double walled' type? Could be, most likely is, a High Pitch instrument. There is no truly satisfactory remedy. Enjoy it as a display piece.

He is saying it is the armored-type Conn, not the "regular" double wall. The armored models were metal covered hard rubber construction. You might ask the guy that runs www.silver-clarinet.com. I imagine if anybody will be able to tell you what is going on it might be him. What you are telling us just doesn't add up- Low Pitch length but plays like a High Pitch?
