Well, today was my 49th birthday. As a present, my wife had told me several weeks ago to keep Saturday after work open as well as Sunday (prior to a concert I played in today). Turns out she and my daughter Margaret took me to Kalamazoo yesterday, where I got to hear the Tokyo String Quartet and Sabine Meyer in concert. The Quartet opened with a beautiful Beethoven quartet and then played a Bartok Quartet, followed by intermission.
After the break, the Quartet came back on with Sabine. They played the Brahms quintet. Sabine was playing her basset clarinet and sounded beautiful. It was a very enjoyable evening, even with the Bartok! I know there were a couple of other folks from the board at the concert, and I imagine a few more will be listening tonight in Ann Arbor. Have a good time!

Sound's like a wonderful concert, wish I could have heard the Brahms. Was she really playing Brahms on a basset? It's not written for basset. You should get hold of her live recording of the Brahms with the Albern Berg Quartet on EMI, it's stunning.

It was definitely the basset. The clarinet qas way too long to be a standard A clarinet, and far too much keywork, too! Who knows... maybe she just traveled witht eh basset this time, or maybe she is playing a work somewhere else which requires the use of the basset. A little Mozart, anyone?
It's funny. The only reason we even knew about this performance was that my wife and daughter were at WMU last month for a performance my daughter was in at the music school. My wife was checking online to see what else was going on in Kalamazoo in the near future, and came across the listing for the concert. The best part was that my daughter and I each got in at the student rate of $5. I am taking a class at the local college where I work, and they said that this qualified me for the discount. My wife would have paid full fare for me, but if she could save a few bucks, this covered the cost of the hotel versus a day trip to Ann Arbor.

I was at that concert.
I know Margaret. We went to Seminar together in '07 and '08. We've met before.
The clarinet wasn't a basset (I was about ten feet from her)...she's just a much smaller woman than she appears on stage. It was an ohler system clarinet, which has more keys...so it looked a little flashier than a bohem clarinet too.
PS. I really liked that Bartok :p

I wonder which Bartok qt. it was - as a group those six quartets stand at as high a level as any similar body of music I'm aware of.
