 Leads to Vandoren Reeds Supplier
Author: miket

Vandoren reeds are getting more expensive in Singapore. The distributors control and mark up the prices. I tried to use the cheaper reeds such as Maca, Rico Royal, Reeds Australia etc, but the result was not satisfactory.

A friend of mine who is a music shop owner intends to help by selling the said reeds at more reasonable prices, but he is not able to get the supply from the manufacturer. I heard that some retailers in other countries are able to get the reeds supply directly from the factory or the plantation. I would appreciate it if someone could provide leads to help my friend to get the Vandoren reeds supply.

There are other lines of reeds to try including Gonzales and my favorite the Rico Reserve. Vandoren isn't the only quality reed out there.

I'm going to second the Rico Reserve line. They're a-freakin-mazing, and may cost less than the vandorens in a crazy market.

Well I just have to recommend Xilema reeds www.canyesxilema.com. For me the professional has similar sound and resistance feeling as the Rico Reserve, take shorter brake in time and last much longer than the Reserve. I was playing on two Reserve reeds that I broke in slowly for 4 days period and then I played it maybe for 30 min each in my practice. And when I took it to my clarinet lesson they went crap(like a good reed when It's passed it's prime) after 5 min with each. I don't have too much experience with the Xilema but the seams to last as long as the Gonzalez and my role record playing a Gonzalez was almost up to 40 hours of playing. With Vandoren I get maybe 25 hours at most.

Rico Royal is not their proffessional reed. Rico makes several other proffesional cuts including the Reserve. I use their Thick Blank (and reeds I make myself) on clarinet and the bass reeds on bass clarinet, only one cut for bass. ESP

If you want to buy something at the cheapest possible price you should contact the company. From Vandoren's website... <info@vandoren.fr>
Also, it might be worth it to buy from another country and have it sent to you by mail.

According to the Vandoren website, the home address is

VANDOREN
56 rue Lepic
5018 Paris
Tel.(+01) 53 41 83 00
Fax. (+01) 53 41 83 01
info@vandoren.fr

Would it also be any cheaper or easier to order your reeds on your own from one of the mail order companies from the US or elsewhere?

There have been a number of comments so far about other brands. You should try some of those to see what works for you. It is always an individual thing, based on what works best on your set up and to your taste. For example, I find Vandoren (V12 or classic) to work best for me. I have had success with Rico Grand Concert thick blank. A number of others including Gonzalez, Xilema, Rico Reserve, Zonda did not work as well for me.
