Is it feasible to put the links to other sections of the site at the top or the bottom of the Phorum? Those links are convenient, to skip having to load "Home" before visiting the archives search, etc.

It's feasible (and it's how it used to be), but the page was way too cluttered with all that. I purposely removed the set of menus.

Perhaps adding the pages to your "Favorites" list under their own folder on your browser would do the trick.

Here is another idea that might work:

A vertical column on one side of the pages with the links to the other sections of the site.

No thanks. Even on the homepage it's cluttered, and cutting the width here will make the pages even longer.

Every site is a tradeoff of space, information and speed. Too much and things get buried (how many times have people not been able to navigate the site because there were too many choices in the menus?) I don't have time to write 3 or 4 different Javascript versions of the menus (and people using Mosaic or Lynx would still have problems).

If this were a commercial site I could hire a team to work just on navigation - which is what those big sites do. Writing for every browser is a non-trivial task (and testing becomes problematical). As it is I have to check for usability for PCs and Macs running different versions of IE & Mavigator, and I run Lynx, too, to make sure the site is at least marginally usable under it, too. I have a couple of people who are thinking about translating the site into different languages - I have to make sure that the layout will accomodate that, too.

After careful consideration, perhaps I can come up with a compromise after all the pages are set up in the new format:

I can write a "Portal" style program whereby you can add your own "Clarinet Pages" selections to a private menu (and turn it on & off). That way I'm happy & can leave the pages uncluttered, but you'd have the option of cluttering the pages back up with your own selection of entries that you'd like to have available. Cookies would have to be turned on if you use it, though.

Fair enough ? :^)

What's a selection box?

See that box right under the advert for sheet music plus? It says "Sponsors", a little arrow and a little "Go" button next to it. Click on the word Sponsors or the arrow, select the place you'd like to go, and click "Go".

That's a selection box (also known as a "pulldown").

Thanks. I should have figured it out. Yes, I like selection boxes.
