let me introduce myself: My name is Maggie, and I am thirteen. I have played the clarinet for three years, and I love it! I am also a cadette girl scout. I have been on this bboard for some time, even

In order to complete a music-related Girl Scout badge, I need to "Talk to other people and find out how they got started in the field of music." So, my question is this:

For those of you that have any kind of career involving music (and I know you're out there!), what is it, and how did you get started with that job?

In advance, Thanx so much for replying!

Having a granddaughter of your age, I'll try to help. My career is/was in engineering and music was/is at best a low-paying hobby in a variety of dance bands [1935- 65] , and continues as a mainly "pro-bono" playing in all sorts of musical groups, hopefully forever!! Like you, I started at age 10 on clarinet, worked in grocery stores to earn my first alto sax, my first dance band pay was $2 for a 3 hour job! I have belonged to the Amer. Federation of Musicians for 50 years and served as officer and went to several International meetings. Except for receiving the full pay for my band's performances, the max.single job pay I recall was $200, for symphonic bass clarinet- Bb clar. substitution. Music has been and continues as a major component of my life.. If you have questions, why dont you send me an E-Mail and I'll add to the above. Oh,yes, I earned my Boy Scout Music Merit Badge rather easily, toward my Eagle! Best wishes, Don

Hi Maggie,

My name is Lynne & I live in England. I'm a professional clarinet player & teacher, & I also used to be in the girl guides! I started playing the clarinet when I was 13 & realised it was what I wanted to do for a living after my first couple of lessons. It was the one thing in school that I was quite good at; at every other lesson I struggled. I run my own trio & we play for weddings & parties & we hope to get some work playing on a cruise ship one day. I also play in musicals throughout England & I play in a saxophone quartet too. I'm in the process of putting together a clarinet quartet with some friends, also with the prospect of working abroad. I teach in 2 schools, & also from home in the evening. My pupils range from 8 years old to over 60! Many of my private pupils are retired adults. Hope this helps. do e-mail me direct if you need any more info.

Best wishes,

Lynne.
