I'm looking at a CL480 (JBCL480XX-P)
Is this a good intermediate clarinet?
My son plays in marching band and some school concerts.
Thanks,
Scott

The JB clarinets are marketed by Sam Ash and are made by various Chinese companies at various times. They are not godawful but I would not recommend them (in any of their incarnations).
The student model clarinet by Tom Ridenour is $625+shipping.

"The student model clarinet by Tom Ridenour is $625+shipping."
And if you check his store at "that auction site" you will occasionally find them at a price starting at $350 or so!

Ok, I went to Sam Ash today and while I was there I checked out a Baptiste Clarinet - it was their entry model plastic one (don't remember the # but it was $259)
Amazingly enough the keys are Silver Plated! Sadly though, and what counts more is that the bore looked like crap. It had shards of plastic shavings still in it from where the cutter did a sloppy job.
Nice keys, crap for a bore.
Not good.

DB- I have played models that were much better than expected... bordering on "good for a student model" quality. As I mentioned above, though, Sam Ash changes the maker of these often to which ever company gives them a better deal. Perhaps the one I played was from a better company, but they are clearly not using them anymore.
