 Clarinet problems :(
Author: bombus
Date:   2008-09-17 02:02

I have been playing for 2 years and ive never had these problems before.
Whenever i try to play low E, the note comes out as if i pressed the register key. It's the same with low F until i open my throat.

Another problem is that the notes A-C (D-F with register) won't come out. I know it's not because of my skill because I have been able to play these notes and higher for a long time.

Any help?

You have a leak on the upper joint of your clarinet. Take it to a repair tech.

Have someone else play your horn to double check, and you play theirs (if you feel the need).

Okay thanks a lot. That makes a lot of sense.

I had the same problem a while ago. Found out it was the Ab key leaking. Just take it to a tech.

Me, too, although on my instrument it was the A key rather than the Ab key. (Same part of the instrument, though, which is not a surprise) Very slight leak, but enough to cause me intermittent problems in the low notes.

Turns out the leaking key was the A key.

Hey, the good news is that is wasn't you! Life is frustrating when our equipment doesn't work FOR us.

A throat A key leak is often caused by a problem with the area where the spring touches the clarinet body. A tiny worn groove with a tiny wall at the end of it, or rust on the spring, etc.

Also, this recent thread may throw light on other possibilities.
http://test.woodwind.org/clarinet/BBoard/read.html?f=1&i=283368&t=283368

There are many other possibilities not mentioned.
A major skill of a good technician is very rapid diagnosis - within seconds.
But diagnosis is often an extremely haphazard (but sometimes fun) process via forum.

Hi bombus, quick question, will those lower notes play if you slide down the scale into them? Or do they still come out 'upper register' regardless?

Then when you play A, the G# key may not lift up like it should (or when it should). Your A's may not sound like A's, or you might get some extra little "blip" sound when you press the A key. That's if it's misaligned.

If it's aligned properly but simply out of adjustment you could have the same problem(s) as above (if not screwed in enough) or you could have a leak out of the G# key (if screwed in too much).
