 "Paul Durand Corvette" clarinet
Author: Geirskogul

I have just acquired a wooden clarinet with the markings "Paul Durand" and "Corvette" on the barrel, both joints, and bell. Between the name and "Corvette" is a logo of a shopfront with the word "Paris" as the name (Pics to come soon, I don't have a camera with me right now). The serial number on both joints in 1053. Any clues as to year/make/whatever? Besides needing a new cork, it sounds great to me.

Oh, and it came in a Leblanc case, but I think that that's irrelevant

"Leblanc case"

Yes, and a fine reed too. It looks like you got lucky on that one, I missed it completely.

If it helps with age, I polished the keys today and found that they were NOT plated. There was some yellow (and green in spots) tarnish on all of the places your fingers touch, but with a little work and a very large polishing wheel it came off, but didn't "burn off" the plating (as there was none) like I've done with other clarinet keys. Solid shiny something.

Many older clarinets were made with unplated nickel-silver keywork.

PICTURES!

Also, the clarinet is shorter than my Yamaha YCL-23N by about 1.1 centimeter. This puts it at just a BIT taller than my starter "Glenn-Edward" (ie: chinese) beginners clarinet, which is about 1.2cm shorter than the Yamaha (it also has a narrower bore). I've measured a little bit (at the ends of each joint) and the Paul Durand has a wider bore overall. Not by much, but it takes a LOT of air to play, even after new pads.

On my tuner, I have to set the "Bb Clarinet" setting to 452 (the highest it goes) to get the notes to "line up." If I don't, when I play open G, the tuner says "Ab or G#" on 440. 452 lets me get it within +/- 5 cents of center. (for fun I set it to 444 and everything is +40 cents exactly).

No wait this problem was solved with a longer barrel (the barrel off of my Yamaha fit nicely). Both my el-cheapo chinese clarinet and the Paul Durand have 61mm barrels. The Yamaha has a 66. This is a darned shame because the Paul Durand clarinet's barrel is a nice wood, and I'd hate to not use it.

Can anyone recommend a nice barrel? Wood would be awesome (to keep with the motif) but really anything will do. I need something to throw in the PD's case when I take it places. And for a bit there I thought that it was an old HP tuned clarinet...that would have sucked.

I've never heard of the PD clarinet...

If you like your Yamaha clarinet more I would do this:
Use the Yamaha barrel on your PD; get a different one for your Yamaha (there are many good barrels out there!)

I have the same clarinet. I was wondering if you could give me information on it?
