New intonation issues on the same set up of six years..

Hi Guys,

I'm having some new problems with my Bb clarinet as of late. I've used the same set up for about six years and have always been happy. As of late certain notes on my clarinet have gone really flat.

Throat E, F, Eb are all flatter than ever before. On anything sustained above a mp I have to put down the pinky or sliver key depending on the note.

High D above the staff is now flat.

I have a pretty good ear and these new intonation issues are driving me absolutely insane. I have an appointment with Rick Sayre towards the end of next month but any advice that could help me in the meanwhile would be greatly appreciated.

Maybe a dumb question, but are your tone holes clean? Stuff can build up on the top of the hole or in the undercut part. Register tube?

Rick is great and will figure it out.

Is it a wooden clarinet? If so, and the wood is drying out, that can cause intonation issues. Might be time for a treatment with a good plant-based oil such as Bore Doctor or GrenadOil from Doc Henderson or something similar from Mr. Naylor.

Take a close look at the wood at the tenons, expecially the upper tenon of the top joint. If it looks grayish, instead of shiny black, this may indicate the wood is drying out.
