Hi, I'd like to ask if you could advise on a book of studies and also books of exercises to improve technique. I'm about Grade 6 standard, adult player, my teacher is a bit lacking in direction (but I live in the middle of nowhere and there aren't too many clarinet teachers round here...) and doesn't really know what to suggest. I've been massacring the Rose 32 studies (well.. the odd numbered ones), which I read about on the Bboard. I love them dearly but I think the even numbered ones look a bit difficult... Do you think it's worthwhile soldiering on, or do you have any other ideas??
Best regards to all

Book 1 and 2 of the Hite Melodious / Progressive Studies published by Southern Music are WONDERFUL.
Give them a shot - they are much more playable and are really good for getting to the point where you can play the Rose well.

My advice is the Uhl 48 studies puplised by Scott in 2 volumes. Play them and then you should try to play them on the bass clarinet(very tricky).

The Uhl studies are a different beast from the Rose. If you are having trouble with the Rose then forget playing the Uhl.
I say keep working on the Rose; they are standard. If they are too difficult then the Hite book is an excellent suggestion.
For a great technique builder I use the Opperman book 1. Book 2 is also good, but book 3 is just maddening to play.

Klose' scales and scales in thirds, Langenus book 3, and Baermann book 3 are all good for finger technique building. (Attempt Klose' and Langenus before Baermann.) For melodious stuff, yeah, go with the Hite book 1, Melodious and Progressive Studies. James Collis method, books 3 and 4 are also ok, but Hite is prettier.

Great, thanks for your suggestions. I've ordered the Hite Book 1 to start with and will check out the others.
Thanks again (I only wish you lived in rural France....)
