Bay bass clarinet neck

I recently purchased a Charles Bay neck/mpc/ligature set for my Leblanc bass clarinet. It plays very easily and adds a wonderful rich & colorful sound to the horn but the finish on the neck has several wrinkles or creases in it that Bay says are a "normal & inadvertant consequence from the bending process". I was wondering if anybody else is familiar with this.

Ed, I have played on a Bay mouthpiece neck setup before. Aren't they wonderful? Anyway, the neck I used did not have and wrinkles or creases in it. I have not heard of this being a normal consequence on the bending process, either, all though it does sound feasible. -- Nate Zeien

Whenever I bend my neck, I get wrinkles and creases in it! But all seriousness aside, for as much as he charges, Dr. Bay should have removed any creases and wrinkles from your neck! By the way, I have personally re-angled a number of bass clarinet necks (by cutting and re-silver-soldering them, the way Dr. Bay originally did his years ago) and it costs me a few dollars in solder and flux, and about six hours of labor. The downside is, if the neck is plated, my job removes some of that plating. If it's a solid nickel-silver neck, however, there's no such a problem and the modification looks really good when it's done without having to re-plate the neck.

I have two of Mr. Bay's neck sets and neither have a wrinkle in them.What you do see is a rather sharp change in angle where the Mpc. plugs in. But, that is the "proverbial" improved angle your looking for. I don't believe these imperfections will hurt the necks performance. In my work, we see pipe bends in heavy materials with this sort of imperfection. There, it's caused by improper bending temperature. But, I do not know if Mr. Bay actuall bends his tubing (hot/cold)or just customizes the finnished neck by soldering on the Mpc. socket at the "improved angle".

Brass is usually bent with ice inside, which does not cause any wrinkles. FIY
