 Downloadable Bonade Book
Author: mrn
Date:   2008-09-08 16:05

In case anyone is looking for it, I just discovered that Daniel Bonade's "Clarinetist's Compendium" is now downloadable as a PDF from Leblanc's website.

http://www.leblancclarinets.com/resources/

(Don't know if this is news to everyone, but I hadn't seen any posts on here about it, so I thought I'd post something.)

I bought a print copy of this years ago because I wanted to learn how to fix reeds, and it has a chapter on that.

Fantastic to have, thank you mrn.

I think I need a new signature...

'If a certified, good universal mouthpiece does not satisfy a clarinetist, my first remark is "what is wrong with the embouchure?"'

On the same site you can also download the Rose "16 Phrasing Studies", which are the odd numbered (slow) etudes from the Rose 32.

Ironic that Leblanc features video of the Gran Partita, yet fails to mention its Basset Horn in the products listings.

Has Leblanc discontinued BH production? Is Morrie Bakun re-designing it?

It's a great resource though with the Bonade and Snavely books for free.

"Don't tell Dan Leeson"

- it's bad enough that I used "Leblanc" and "basset horn" in the same sentence...

Hello All,

With regard to the Leblanc basset horn, we are filling current backorders and then discontinuing it for redesign. Keeping it in the offering in its current state makes little sense based on its obvious problems. Though it will not be under the Backun Series of clarinets, we will get the input of Morrie as well as other consultations with artists and designers. We plan to offer a bassett horn again in a little over a year.

Thanks, Scott, for the update on Leblanc BHs. Interesting news.

As a proud player of a late 1950s era Leblanc Basset Horn, I look forward to the redesign.

Leblanc Basset Horn Status (was Re: Downloadable Bonade Book)

Hello Scot,

I'm new around here; so I hope you'll pardon my jumping in late. I recently acquired a Leblanc Basset Horn (s/n 8057) from the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, and after a few tweaks to get all six pads to close together on the low C lever I think it's a great horn. But I am a newcomer when it comes to bassets, and would be interested in knowing more about the "obvious problems" that have taken this model out of the Lebanc lineup.

Thanks,
Jim Lockwood

I play a Le Blanc basset horn and like it but the horn is sharp. By pulling out the neck joint and mouthpiece for a total of ~1/2" you can reach A440. Unadjusted it's ~444. The LeBlanc has less resistance than many basset horns but I don't think the sound is that diffferent than the Selmer and Buffet models. I've had no problem with the mechanism and it feels comfortable to me.

I'd like to get an adjustable neck joint from the new horns to use on mine and I think it would be a truly wonderful horn.

Thanks Eefer Guy,

That's interesting. I have no difficulty tuning my Leblanc basset horn to A440. Depending on conditions, I might pull it out as much a a tenth of an inch - no more than that. I wonder if my neck is longer?? Relative intonation is at least as good as my soprano instruments. In terms of the sound, I find that the ligature makes a big difference. I use a Vandoren Optimum with the second plate - the one with the ridges that go across the reed - to get what I think is a reasonably characteristic sound. As to the mechanism, it might be nice to have an alternative fingering or two, but as an amateur who doubles everything from eefer to bass I'm doing well to have learned to find the intended lever as it is!

Those Bonade books are also available again commercially thanks to Larry Guy. If you don't want to bother downloading and printing them yourself, he publishes them bound in one volume. "The Complete Bonade" includes the Phrasing Studies, the Orchestral Studies and the Clarinetist's Compendium for $25. Besides that volume, there are some other interesting Larry Guy/Bonade items available as well.
