I have a Clarinet I would like completely overhauled, including silver plating of the keys. Can anyone recommend a good company to do this?

Thank you.

I just had a Buffet R13 A completely overhauled at our local repair shoppe with no major problems. For the silver plating, the keys and posts were outsourced to a place in Indiana (I think) and that took about a month, but they came back look'n like new. My favorite local repairperson, Mary Jones, reassembled the clarinet, "with no parts left over" and I am quite pleased with the result. But really, almost any trained repair technician "anywhere" can overhaul a clarinet successfully at a reasonalbe cost. My silver plating cost a little under $200 and the overhaul part, around $300--cork pads on top joint, tendons, new skin pads, key adjustment and reassembly of tone posts, etc. Costs may vary from place to place, but the results should be the same. I really don't think it is necessary to seek out a "good" repairperson when a "qualified" one will be able to do what is necessary and adjust to your own personal specs when done. Sending it to Chicago or New York is not necessary--stick with your local technicians. They are just as good.

For an answer to your question, ask one of the clarinetists of the Cleveland Orchestra where they take their instruments if a key falls off?? :>)

Check with John Stavich at Educators in Lakewood or with John Deavers at Driscol Music in Lorain.

Both do great work. Stavich is a terrific clarinetist as well. U of Michigan and US Navy Band as I recall.

Tim Clark is near you in Columbus area. He is very good, but he is costly.
His link is on this .org -under resources.
Also, Marks Music http://www.marksmusic.com/customizing.html is nearby and has a good reputation.
If you are contemplating a trip to Pittsburgh, Hollis and Germann are good.

I have to partially disagree with William. Your local technician *may* be just as good. The quality of a technician will make a huge difference in how well your clarinet plays. A good tech may very well make your horn play better than you thought it could. A bad tech may make it play worse than when you brought it to them. Some "fixes" that make it sound better for a couple weeks will actually force a full overhaul a few months down the line.

There is most likely a reputable tech in your area. Ask around. Ask people you trust. Ask at a university. Once the first person gives you a few names, see if others recommend them too, and ask what others think of them. There will always be a person or two who think a bad tech is a good one because they've never had their horn worked on by a good one and don't know any better.

In my area, I can think of as many good places to take your instrument as there are mediocre or bad.

If a key falls off, you obviously took it to the wrong tech :)

Call some players from the Cleveland Symphony or local university and ask them whom they recommend in your area. That way you will get a professional tech. A really good overhaul is not cheap because it should take many hours to do a very good job. You get what you pay for. ESP www.peabody.jhu.edu/457
