The last 3 weeks or so I have noticed that my mouthpiece patch (the thick ones) are becoming soft quite quickly, which never happened before.
So, how long should a mouthpiece patch be used, given that I play on average per day about an hour and a half?

I've never "worn-out" a rubber one, have left tooth marks in a plastic. Of course I dont play that much, and do alternate between single and double emb. on mainly bass, alto sax, only minor any more on sop it seems. Don

Hello Meri, my mouth patch, the thick one, on my soprano clarinet has never worn out, and I play it everyday..BUT,that same thick patch on my bass clarinet only lasts about two weeks, and I play it everyday!!! Don't ask me why I don't know!!! I rotate the patch on my bass , by pulling it off and re positioning it, so I get at least four uses from the same patch..

I use the Vandoren clear patches on my Bb and I don't wear through them quickly at all. It probably takes a good 6 months to wear through it (my teeth are uneven and eventually wear a hole through it.) They are thinner and stronger, so I think that helps.

For me, the wear on the mouthpiece patch has to do, in part, with my frequent cleaning of the mouthpiece. At times my upper teeth makes impressions which vary. This may be related to a softening cause by the cleaning. I would guess my patches are changed about every 6 months or so. BTW: I buy (mostly) the Runyan mouthpiece patch and I CUT THEM IN HALF and thus get two patches from each one. I saw my teacher do this and realized that I wasn't even (ever) touching the lower portion of the moutpiece patch. She teaches me so much ... mw
