I've had an M13 Lyre Vandoren Mouthpiece, and this year, I used it during marching band camp (2 weeks, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. outdoors), and it lost its shine. I think this is b/c of sun damage. Can the sun cause any damage other than superficial damage to a mouthpiece?

I believe only in extreme heat would the MP change other then losing the shine. So my answer is probably no damage but I can't say I'm an expert on the matter. ESP www.peabody.jhu.edu/457 Listen to a little Mozart, played live but not recorded in a marching band.

If nothing else, this should reinforce the idea of never using a decent mouthpiece for marching. Find an old, cheap one that you won't mind sacrificing, and use that as a throwaway. If it lasts for a season or two, you have had a pleasant surprise. When I marched, I used the garbage mouthpiece that came with my R13. It wasn't fit for concert playing, so it got relegated for marching affixed to my Bundy.
