I have a 5 year old son who is very interested in playing the clarinet. Every time I pick up my clarinet to play he wants to play as well. Eventhough he is 5 he can pick up my clarinet and blow a note. I have bought him a recorder which he plays, however he is interested in the real thing. I have been reading about the Lyons clarinet and also a clarinet which is made here in Australia (I think) kinder clari. Is it advisable to buy him one of these given his age. Any information is appreciated.

Simon,
There's some information buried here about the Lyons clarinet (and Graham Lyons is a sponsor of the site). If you search for Lyon or Lyons you should come up with some info.

Simon, I have heard of the Kinder clarinet. It is a student model plastic Eb clarinet. As far as the quality goes, I am not sure how good it is. I have read that it is specially designed for easier playing, to suit younger players. It is also reasonably priced. There arises a problem in school bands, though - Bb is generally preferred, if not required. If you can afford it, you could start him on efer, and then, when he's ready, move him on to Bb. Good luck. -- Nate Zeien

Personally I wouldn't do that - the Eb is a harder instrument to control.

Some of the German made C clarinets are good for small hands and a lot easier to play than the Effer. The Lyons should be the same size but with a simpler key system.

I don't want to offend anyone, but I've had experience of the Lyons C clarinet & I really don't like them. (Sorry Mark, I know he's a sponser of this site, so perhaps I shouldn't say anymore........) My advice would be to wait & get an ordinary Bb instrument when your son is big enough. I regularly turn down pupils if I think they're not big enough to cope with the instrument.

No problem. Not everyone likes them - but enough do so that he keeps making them.
