I have been wanting to get a triple labret for a long time now, and I was wondering if anyone has any experience playing the clarinet with lip piercings. I don't use correct embochure (yes, I know that's not a good thing) but I am still in the top of clarinet players for Southwest Iowa, and am also in the top of my band. But I checked as best I could (okay I put my finger where the stud would be) and as far as I know the stud would not bother the reed at all. I have a slight gap (barely noticable to others) on the right side of my mouth between the top lip and the bottom lip (I bit my lip as a child) so I know a ring there wouldn't bother my embochure and the left side of my mouth has ( as far as I know) normal "gapage" so I am pretty sure it wouldn't affect my playing much, but wanted to ask if anyone out there has experience with playing the clarinet with a lip piercing.

Don't have it done. It may look cool, but it could have disastrous consequences if things go wrong.
Lip piercings go through the lip muscles so you don't know how this could affect your embouchure until you have it done, by which time you will find out only too late that damage has been done.
All piercings carry a degree of risk, and with the increased risk of infection or rejection you're best not having it done at all.
Just stick with ear or nose piercings and don't bother with piercings that may inhibit playing, or piercings in 'other' places.

for the past few weeks i have wondered the exact same thing. I wanted to get my tongue peirced and i new it would be hard to 'tongue' at first but figured i could always take it out when playing if it was that much of a bother, but i also wanted to pierce my libret as well and figured that would be much harder to adjust to. Just todday when i was playing in band i noticed that my bottom lip is right up against the reed when i play and it gets a fair amout of pressure as well and i assumed that it would press down pretty hard on the stud (not trying a ring while playing lol). But i was going to at least wait until the end of the school year or christmas break or something so that it would have time to heal before i start playing and have it hurt twice as bad lol. Plus if you wait until it is healed, you can always just remove it when you play, which is what im planning on doing.. still curious if anyone has tackled this yet... hmm

I had a classmate that had a tongue stud and she said it had no effect on her playing saxophone as "you articulate with the tip anyway".
She wasn't very good, though I can't say the piercing was at fault.
I think a lip would be a problem, though.

I taught a few lessons to a friend once (she's a phenomenal singer and very natural musically--she mostly has performed traditional Latvian music and can sing one tune while whistling another). After telling her about how to tongue, I noticed a "heavier" sound than is "typical" for even beginning clarinetists. She said, "Oh, might this have something to do with it?" and popped her tongue piercing out. She took the stud out for playing after that.
Yes a tongue piercing affects the sound of your articulation. It is, however, not something you can't remove if you need it. I wouldn't recommend a classical performer get a tongue piercing, or maybe even a jazzer, but for the average kid I don't think it's actually a dealbreaker...
