Hi there,
My recital which is to be performed very soon, includes a piece of which there is a movement I do not know the speed of. i should have figured this out earlier..
Concertino for Clarinet by Matyas Seiber. (Hungarian composer, interesting..)
Movement 4 "Recitativo" . On the score I have a marking of minum=120, but I, and others, including my teacher, believe this is wrong. besides the tempo recordings take it at is far from minum=120. There is no way a recitative style piece could be marked at that tempo??
Can someone please comment on this?? Do oyu know the tempo? Even though the tempo will fluctuate in a recitative piece, Surely, the speed is not minum=120??

"Hungarian composer, interesting.."
Born in Hungary, but not really a Hungarian. He was Jewish rather than an ethnic Hungarian; he moved to Germany as a young man and then to England.
Seiber can be considered an English composer in the same sense that Handel is (by the English, anyway).
To turn to your question, may I point out that Thea King recorded it, and the 2002 reissue of the recording is available from amazon.co.uk.

If you go to:
http://www.hyperion-records.co.uk/tw.asp?w=W613
you will find track timings; the 4th movement takes 2:55.

If your score is marked "minum" (half-note) = 120, it is an error. In my copy of the Seiber, the fifth movement, Finale, is marked "Allegro" with a half note "cca 120." The fourth movement, Recitativo, however, is marked eighth note "cca 120." That seems about right to me.
Best regards,

Jack, thank you!
My editions has minum "cca 120" , the Recitativo mvt. Both recordings I have heard go far far slower than minum=120. So your edition has 4th mvt at quaver=120? And, what is your edition?
A misprint obviously, but in EVERY copy of the edition I'm using..??

Yes, quaver cca 120, marked both in the solo part and the piano accompaniment. My edition is Schott (ED 10341). I expect Schott is the only publisher. I don't know how long ago my copy was printed but it was at least several years ago (I paid US$12 for the piano reduction and the list price is now US$19.95 at Luyben and SheetMusicPlus). It is apparently, however, a "new" printing where Schott corrected the error. I can say that because, inside the cover of the piano part, along with the solo part I purchased, I just found a photocopy that I made in the late 1970s of an older printing. It is marked minum cca 120, as yours is.
Best regards,
jnk
