Isn't this a marvelous work for the clarinet? I love this piece and evidently Benny Goodman did also....infact that is why i am writing. Does anyone know the record label and serial number of one of his recordings of this piece? Or the Richard Stolzman version of it? I heard that Stolzman really tears it up in the 80 measure long cadenza. If you can help i would be very appreciative. thanks in advance

A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of hearing this piece performed live. Charles Neidich performed the original version of the concerto that was cited as being to hard for Goodman. Goodman sent this copy back to Copland and told him to fix some things, like the super high Cs. The one that Goodman played is the one that everyone performs. If Neidich has a recording of this, it might be worth it to get it and hear it. It is truly amazing!

Yes, it's a superb work - a beatiful melodic section ad a jazzy section connected by a cadenza.
Stoltzman records on the BMG Classics label. I THINK the CD that contains the Copland concerto is titled "The Essential Clarinet."

Ted is correct; Stoltzman's version of the Copland concerto is on a CD entitled "The Essential Clarinet." It also contains Stravinsky's "Ebony Concerto," Bernstein's "Prelude, Fugue and Riffs," and Corigliano's clarinet concerto. The serial # is 09026-61360-2 and is distributed by BMG Classics. It is an excellent CD, and I would *HIGHLY* recommend it!

I have a recording of Benny playing several of the oncertos and chamber works written for him. It's from several records rereleased onto one cd... i don't know if it's still available or not. I'll have to ask Brian the label and number cuz i just copied it from him onto minidisc.

Stephanie -
There are at least 5 BG recordings of the Copland concerto. The first was with Copland conducting a small orchestra on a Columbia mono LP. It's hard to find in playable condition, and is probably not worth it, since the ensemble playing is pretty scrappy. He made a second LP with Copland conducting, this time with a full orchestra, which is excellent. He really makes it his own. I think this has been reissued on CD. There is also an aircheck of the world premiere, with, of all people, Fritz Reiner and the NBC Symphony. It's pretty awful. Neither Reiner nor the orchestra has a clue, and every body gets lost over and over. Then there is a modern recording with Morton Gould and another with Bernstein, both of which are or recently have been available on CD, and both of which are pretty good, though not quite as good as the second one with Copland (though of course in much better sound).
My favorite performance after the second BG/Copland is William Blount with, I think, the Orchestra of St. Lukes. He's a teriffic player with a lot of jazz experience, and he gets it just right. Stoltzman recording is also excellent, as are those by Stanley Drucker and Gary Gray. All of these except the first BG/Copland are listed in the Sneezy discography.
Happy listening.

imho, copland wrote some superb orchestral parts for clarinet, too...he had a real feel for what the horn could do...simple gifts in app.spring...etc....my favorite is the sextet for string q, clarinet and piano, with harold wright..
