 Target Brand Ligature
Author: BobD
Date:   2008-08-06 21:51

I'm posting this for all players who keep looking for a good ligature. My wife's prescriptions are filled at our local Target store. Their current prescription bottles are an odd shape and contain a "rubber O-ring" on the neck. These rings are probably not rubber per se and have a square cross-section rather than round. Out of curiosity I popped one on my mp over a reed instead of a conventional ligature and it ain't bad. The purple color takes some getting used to, tho.

tried it before. stiffened the sound too much.

But they are covered by health plan and can be refilled 3 times before a new Rx is needed.....can Rovner, BG, Bonade etc. make that claim? [grin]

C2thew...if it stiffened the sound, maybe you shouldn't use one from an Rx that ...ahem....(use imagination here)

Sure enuf, O Rings do work, possibly because they only tie down the reed in ?stragetically? selected locations. I also have a 2-O-Ring lig, and its patent if anyone is interested ! Not much inpressed with it, but it sort of approaches the Luyben's four points of reed contact, I like the L's. Don

Don, I've used conventional O-rings too but the square cross section of the Targets essentially eliminates any tendency to "roll".

"The Draznik flexi lig". Disposable and lightweight, this high performance rubber compound reed clamp is the ideal travel companion for your mouthpiece.

How does that blurb sound?

Hi Bob - The patent # is 4,437,776, well expired. In Col. 4 he describes the DuPont O-Rings but says that "varying cross-sectional geometries are equivalent". Yes my lig does some "rollin' along", I usually just eliminate any "twist". I rather doubt that your discovery is very patentable, prob. only a small market also, but where can we get the "square rings" if other than Target's size is needed. Much FUN, Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

Don...Target's prescription bottle system is called "Clear Rx" and was developed and patented by Deborah Adler. The rings come in 6 different colors. Google on target.com and then search for "Clear Rx". I'm sure Target would be happy to supply any clarinet player with samples since the invention has received wide publicity. In the O-Ring industry the style is called "Square Cut".

Russ...No thank you....Target and Ms. Adler should get full credit.

i might have tried something else then. as the rubber washer shaped ligature you're referring to had a tight grip on the reed, and didn't allow it to vibrate as much: thus the nothing special and move along approach.

And then there's the true connoisseur's Glad Bag Ligature, consisting of a pair of the extra-long twist ties (paper pressed over a wire) from commercial kitchen garbage bags (bin liners). At the next rehearsal, place the twist ties about an inch apart around the reed and mouthpiece. Twist each one to the perfect degree of tension. Say nothing whatsoever to the equipment snob sitting next to you and observe how long s/he can refrain from offering an editorial opinion.

If and when the comment comes, explain (incorporating as many words of at least three syllables as possible) that it's necessary to purchase a high-quality brand of garbage bag and to use only the finest and flattest virgin twist-ties, discarding any that fell on the floor or got pre-twisted in shipping.

I just don't think the world is ready for a purple ligature!

Morrigan....evidently Luyben doesn't agree with that opinion since they already market one....
